1S or DBL?

East (RHO) deals and opens 1.

1. playing SAYC with a pickup partner on BBO, what do you bid?

2. Suppose that you agreed that DBL followed with bidding 1/2 shows 16/17+. Would you rather DBL or bid 1 with this hand? I mean: Is it more attractive to start with DBL then with 1 compared to a hand with eg and switched? What do/don't you like about this hand (I have no specific things in mind with this question, only wondering how to start evaluating a normal hand like this)?

Thanks,

Koen

Close to an X playing in partnerships with a light X + suit, but still a 1 bid.

While I do like that style, and I play it in some partnerships, it has to be a good 16.

AKQxx

xx

x

AQJxx

Same count, but now I'll X-and-suit playing the light version.

Playing the normal version, this isn't close.

(1c)-1S-All Pass[/hv]

1+3

Partner said I should have doubled iso bidding 1. Clearly he should raise , but I wondered if my hand was maybe nice enough to start with a double.

I would normally raise to 3 with a 4-card support, but partner's hand is too defensive which makes 2 the better bid?

Bidding should go?:

(1C)-1S-(P)-2S

(p)-4S

The simple raise is enough.

Move the Queen of clubs to diamonds and we

may start talking about 3S, although given

the vulnerability, 2S is still enough.

The single raise has the widest band width, thats

why people use some artifical bids to differentiate,

but I would not bother until one has fixed more

urgent holes.

Over 2S, I would as South maybe only invite, given

the wide range of the raise, and if I invite, expect that

North passes.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Partner said I should have doubled iso bidding 1.

Anyone who sits there and passes with 4 card support is not someone whom I would want to take bidding advice from.

You are in much better position with an overcall then double rather than a double then having to bid a suit in some uncomfortable situations; a reasonable possibility being partner jumping in your short suits.

You could give me the A instead of the Q and I'd still bid 1. If you give me both the A and Q, it's getting close to double then spades.

Well be fair. If the hearts were AQ it's a pretty obvious double to me, 1 would just be begging to miss a game. I don't even think double is awful if the hearts were Ax but most of my friends would disagree, and in any case I would still consider it inferior to an overcall. On the actual hand double sux and would never cross the mind of any good player.
