Some would overcall 1 with the north hand (I might), some would make a t/o double with the north hand (I wouldn't). Failing that, I think 2 by south over 2 is obvious.

agreed

I'm not ashamed to overcall 1 with North and probably would.

Yea, the shape is gross, I know I know. But my suit is up to snuff, and I like my AQ of behind the opener and I think I'll get a diamond lead if I get to be declarer. If my LHO ends up declarer, I'm not embarrassed by a lead.

And maybe my LHO was planning to bid 1NT, and maybe he won't be able to over my 1 overcall. Thus screwing up their communications a bit.

All in all the plusses seem to outweigh the minuses, so I'm bidding. We just had a l...o...n...g thread in some forum about overcalls on a 4-card suit and this one seems to meet the general consensus formed there IMHO.

I'm totally comfortable passing as North.  After 2, I agree that south can throw in a balancing 2.  If south passes (fearing, maybe, that the bidding might continue???), would north really be crazy to compete to 2?

You mean, pass by North is right over 1, but North should now consider bidding 2 (on a 4-card suit) over 1NT, when he already had his chance to speak his mind on round one? "Hey partner, I'm not good enough to make a one level overcall, but I am good enough to overcall at the 2-level !" ??

That can't be right, can it ?

Bidding 2 with the north hand over 1NT would indeed be completely crazy, but that surely isn't what vuroth had in mind. He's asking if north might consider balancing with 2 in the pass-out seat over 2.

That's very agressive, but far from insane. I don't think many would do it at IMPs, but know many who would at least consider it at MP.

If North's aggressive enough to reopen with a borderline 2 in the passout seat, I think he's certainly aggressive enough to make a pretty reasonable 1 overcall on his first chance to speak.

I have a hard time imagining the player who would make the reopening but who would keep mum on the first round. Maybe he got Dutch courage between the rounds

4 card overcalls at the one level, when the hand is suitable, have a lot to say for them.

What went wrong?

North forget to bid over 1D. Bid 1H.

Why? With 13 hcp, 2 tens and a decent 4 card major find something to overcall at the one level on if possible. Yes it may be a disaster, youzz pays your money and takes youzz chances. This is a good example of a minimum vul hand for this.
