South bids 1♠ and your partner passes. North raises to 2♠ and South bids 4♠. Partner leads the 9 of ♥ and you take your King, declarer playing a small one. You lead the Ace of ♥ and declarer and partner both play small ♥s. It's your lead at trick three. (1) What are the remaining ♥ and who has what in that suit at this point? (2) What is your plan for setting this contract? (3) What do you lead at trick three and why ? Adv & Exp pls hide your answers. Actual hands to follow.... jocdelevat
I will lead heart. I suppose pard led was from doubleton and his ruff can help us with trump promotion.
inquiry
Diamond ACE, then a heart for a trump promotion. Problem with heart first, is declarer maybe able to thorw diamomnd losers on clubs even if you manage a trump promotion. imagine two rounds of trumps, then four rounds of clubs.. give opener Ax of clubs Qx of diamonds, to go along with 4 hearts and 5 spades,
DWM
Assuming we play 2nds and 4ths all the time P started with 2 hearts, declarer 4 including the leftover QJ This meant that declarer started with at least 5-4 in the majors, hence, no more than 4 cards in the minors. Should he have the club ace this means the KQJ in dummy can clear his minors and roll in the contract. to save P the guess as to which minor to play after the heart ruff play the ace of diamonds first. Assuming this is correct I would highly recommend that people buy 'why you lose at bridge' I have not yet finished reading it for the first time and I am finding it is helping me look at hands in a different way. ralph23
♣♦♥♠ [hv=d=n&v=b&n=skq2h42dk987ckqj2&w=s3h93djt6532ct864&e=sjt4hakt86da4c973&s=sa98765hqj75dqca5]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Yes, good thinking! East must cash his ♦ Ace before trying for the trump promotion. All he needs for the promotion to work is for partner to have ANY trump. Note what happens if East carelessly tries the trump promotion without cashing his Ace. West will ruff with his 3 and North will overruff with the Queen. Now declarer just takes the top two ♠, the King and the Ace. Now he plays three rounds of ♣, discarding his losing ♦ on the third round of ♣. Declarer's hand is now good, save for the outstanding master trump, which he surrenders .... and then claims.
