what do you bid as North and why?

is this a support x position?

Double is negative, showing 4 and a decent hand (could be 5+ if too weak for a direct 2 call). Double is the normal first bid for north in this auction.

Presumably south will bid 2 over this double, and I would continue with 3NT by north (showing a club stopper or two, game values, by inference only four spades, and no particular interest in playing in hearts).

99% of of players play X here as negative, showing 8+ hcp, 4+ spades, 3+ diamonds, denies heart support unless also 12+ hcp.

The other 1% plays X here as strength: 10+ (usually 12+), can tolerate a leave-in (not short in clubs).

Both of them would X with this hand.

Make a neg. X, you have 4-4 in the other suits, you

are still searching for a fit.

In case they would be red and your side would be

green, one may contemplate trap passing, a style

issue, know your oppoenents, and you know if

it is worth considering, but given the current

vulnerability go after your own contract, over

2H you intend to bid 3NT.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Hi everyone

A support double is a way to show a 'three card' raise in competition.

Changing the hands around so that the bidding goes 1H-(P)-1S-(2C)-X the double here would be a 'support double' showing three card support while a 2S 'raise' would promise four trump.

The 1H opener would have to switch his diamond and spade holding(and shorten his heart suit) to something like KQx AQJ10x xxx xx

Regards,

Robert

Double by North is take-out (negative) almost always with 4 spades, or more spades and a hand too weak to bid them at once.

It is the correct call on the hand, as a 4-4 spade fit is likely to play better than 3NT. There might also be a diamond fit - opener has no reason to pull 3NT looking at xx Axxxx AKxxx x when 6D is a great spot and 7D has play.

The normal auction on the hand is 1H (2C) x P 2H P 3NT.
