A.

The A may well be described as a desperate lead, but I've already announced that I'm in desperation mode by my 5 call.

I'm going to try to cash my winners, 'cos I don't expect to have any winners and there is no rush to try to take s... not that I expect partner to have a entry.

BTW, I truly do not understand the 5 call, even at favourable at mps. I hate partners who try to win every board all by themselves, and that's what 5 sounds like to me.

I've found that trying to tap on these hands is often the best defense. Obviously either of a diamond or club could be the best way to do this. But the club needs partner only to have Axx or Jxx or the like, whereas a diamond needs partner with the king and also some length. I'd go with the K lead.

By the way, I think 5 is also bizarre.

How many diamond pitches will declarer will get off dummy's spades? I'm guessing two or 3 assuming the suit gets set up. This also assumes that pard does not have a spade entry.

The tap seems pointless to me - the opponents have announced 9 hearts. Its true they may be on a 5-3, but in my experience they have a minimum of 9 trump and probably 10.

I'd lead the club king.

As I can't imagine that Apollo or his partner would bid 5C I suspect that this was an appeal's case where partner made a slow pass of 5H.

Oh no, it was me. This was one of my favorable matchpoint specials that I can only defend by saying that it would have been a great score if I had gotten doubled or found the right lead (which I would also have to do against 4 not to get a crap score obviously).

You can get a way with a LOT at favorable at MPs, especially if you know your opps' tendencies. For instance as long as partner is prepared for this sort of bidding I would routinely open a weak two on xx KJ97x xxxx xx 1st seat favorable.

Agree with the ace of diamonds, we need to try and cash our minor suit tricks immediately and wait on our major suit trick(s). This lead seems especially clear at MP.

The diamond Ace is too obvious. I hate obvious. So, let's see if there is a tricky alternative -- more fun that way.

Club King stands out, but I mean by that "stands out as a ridiculous alternative."

How about a spade? It is plausible that partner has a void there, but that seems like quite the stretch. Plus, it is not creative enough.

Low diamond? Anything possible there? Well, what if I catch partner with Kx, dummy with 5530, and Declarer with the club Ace. I like that -- tricky and all. Of course, that gives Declarer five diamonds, but why not?

So, if I want to win the "guess the secret lead that works" game, I'll try a low diamond. It has merit, and it actually makes some sense. I doubt that a club lead will be the October Surprise, so I may well need partner to have the diamond King anyway. No one else voted small diamond, and I like to be different.

Heck -- put me down for small diamond!

Ken, I am curious, what time is it in the States? How many scotches have you had. First 2C rather than 1S and now the small D. :)

DA for me as well. That 5C bid is hanging from the tress by the way.

I just got off the golf course, 18 holes, wine coolers.

A didn't work so well on the actual deal, though I thought it was fairly clear.

5 can be made on the K too, but it requires declarer to guess Jx with pard, which is doable since when he leads the 10 from hand you're going to duck with Q6543. This declarer was a GLM and may well have been up to the task, but I guess I'll never know.

-650 = 2/23

-620 = 11/23

-500 = 17/23

+100 = 22.5/23
