Twilight zone

You pick up a pedestrian hand:

[hv=d=w&v=b&s=st942h5dj982ckq76]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

EDIT you actually had J982 in , not that it changes much

and the auction starts competetive:

1 1 Dbl

Playing with a someone who does not expect you to bid on total junk, you decide your hand is bad enough for a preemptive raise to 3. Partner seems to agree with this and undeterred bids 4, so you pass.

1 1 Dbl 3

Pass 4 Pass Pass

This auction seems over, right? Guess what, it was just starting...

Dbl Pass 5

Huh? Partner must have a good hand and I've got 4 trumps behind the length, maybe I should Dbl...

5NT Dbl 6

What's going on here? Dbl.

To recap:

1 1 Dbl 3

Pass 4 Pass Pass

Dbl Pass 5 Dbl

5NT Dbl 6 Dbl

Pass Pass Pass

What do you lead?

Who are those opponents?!, I think I'll get a top whatever I lead, but what is best is a mistery. I need some table feelings here.

sorry, this is creating me a headache to try to find what do everyone have, my lead is a spade.

LHO doubled 4S for penalties.

RHO didn't like that and pulled to his red 2-suiter

LHO didn't like that and tried to bid 5NT to play

RHO didn'tl ike that and bid the other half of his red 2-suiter.

I'm not leading a spade.

The book lead, without looking at my hand, is a trump, though I'm a bit nervous about that.

I think I'll lead the king of clubs. That's the suit we need to cash winners in before they go on dummy's spades.

Seems there's no way RHO is even getting out for down two let alone making. Regardless, we need to get our fast black-suit winner(s), before they go away on the other black suit on the table.

If we lead a spade, we could easily find ourselves watching our club trick go away on the A. On the other side of the coin, a club lead could see our spade trick go away on the A.

I'll trust West to have not opened 1, doubled 4 and pulled 5 all with a jack-high club suit, and lead the 10.

A club.

The weirdest thing about these kinds of auctions (yes, this is perhaps one of the weirdest, but...) is that they sometimes land on their feet.

It would not surprise me in the least to find that West has AQx KQxx x Jxxxx and declarer void Axxxxx Kxxxxx x and partner KJxxxx xx AQ Axx.

LHO seems to be a 3=3=1=6. RHO is 0=5=6=2. Pard is left with a 6=4=2=1. Neither opponent has a preponderance of strength, although the diamonds might be established and pard's hearts are sitting well for declarer.

I can live with a heart to stop ruffs, or a club (to stop pitching clubs on a high spade (or 2).

If we beat this we are getting a great board, so I'm thinking that I'll take my +200 or +500 with the club lead, acknowledging that we might have 800 or 1100 with a trump out.

I'll lead the K, but a low club could be right too.

It will not come to a surprise to especially Frances and Mike that the full deal was:

[hv=d=w&v=b&n=sa87653h87daca532&w=skqjhqt42dk53cj84&e=shakj963dqt764ct9&s=st942h5dj982ckq76]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv]

Like some of you, I scored -1660. Those who picked a more successful lead still have to live with just +500, just average since 4 makes (and was played at some tables).

I let myself be blinded by Christmas feelings, then it turned out I was on the naughty list.

Welcome to the twilight zone!

Nice story, but why didn´t you receive two diamond tricks to make it at least +100?

Declarere led a low off dummy, catching north's singleton ace, later ruffed a in dummy, setting up the suit.
