4: yes, this may be a transfer to their 4, but unless RHO is a 1 bidder on 4=5 in the majors (and not everyone is), partner holds 4s and will be well placed to either double or bid 5, when either seems clear. 4 sends the message that I have a LOT of support, shape and not a good hand. He can hammer them with 4 good hearts and some other defence, or can bid 5 'knowing' that I have short s.

If RHO would double with 4=5, then the problem is tougher, but it is usually difficult to ethically ask these questions at the table, without screens.

If I could ask, and learned that RHO may have 4=5, I think I'd chance 5.... the decision is that close.

And 4 involves him, by any chance? It contributes nothing but to convey a distorted message of your playing strength...

The opponents haven't even bid 4M yet! It seems that we might be phantoming too large a percentage of the time if we bid 5. I think you are overestimating your playing strength when we still know very little from the auction.

Again, I don't strongly object to 5, but I do think it's an overbid. Your mileage may vary.

Ditto.

A side note if it matters.

We play overcall structure, so 1 will almost always deny a 4 card major.

Not sure if that changes things for you or not.

In this case 4 Diamond is out. We won´t set them.

Else I would prefer 4 to five.
