navit
In general what are your recommendations concerning takeout doubles?
inquiry
The glib answer is when you want your partner to bid something. I will try to break this down a little bit more. I like "shape specific" takeout doubles. That is, I don't just double because I have some arbitrary number of HCP, like 15 or 16. In general I will have at least three card support for all unbid suits. I will occassionally (well, maybe more than occassionally) double with some 4333 hands of more or less average stregnth. Sometimes, I will risk a double with both majors and a doubleton in the unbid minor. If partner bids that, well hope he has them. With a five card major and takeout double pattern, I will bid the major, and if possible double back in on the next round. I like to use conventional two suited overcalls. A jump to 2NT is unusual, some non-jump 2NT bids are ANY TWO SUITER (not just lowest). I will resort to a takeout double without the necessary shape if I have a GOSH, which stands for "good one suited hand". But this really has to be quite good, so good in fact, I worry that we will miss game if I simply overcall. My GOSH hands are very strong indeed. There are also some very strong balanced hands that start with a double then rebids in notrump. These are ones too strong for a direct 1NT. kenrexford
That's quite a large question. Can you be more specific???

inquiry
What is shape oriented? It means short in their suit, and support for the unbid suits.
SoTired
IMHO, Some general guidelines 1) 3 cards in unbid majors2) opening bid - If you have a choice between 1N overcall and X, take the 1N- If you have a choice between overcall in minor and X, take the X
