Who dares wins?

If you are suggesting a 4S bid, then all I have to say is "You have got to be kidding".

The problems with 4S are the following:

1) It is a total gamble.

2) You still have a partner, (well you mightn't after the 4S bid).

3) If pd has a good hand she will drive to slam, because she expects you to have your bid.

fine fine, send me to the wolves, I'll bid 4S. The usual strategy of pass then bid 4S over partner's balance is not going to work here since he is usually going to pass out 4H with some heart length, even with something like 18 points. I know this is crazy and I just hope partner shares my view of giving lots of leeway in this type of auction and doesnt bust out blackwood ;)

This was the full hand:[hv=d=n&v=e&n=sakj8h543djca9875&w=s1062hk6dkq86ckj63&e=shaqjt9872da543cq&s=sq97543hdt972ct42]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

At my table i passed, playing there for -680

At other table South overcalled, the final contract was 5-2 +100

I'm almost sure in the original post it said the opening bid was 1D not 1C...

why you should think plans against the contract, not reached at those moment ?

i would throw pass, and even if they reach 6 and i'm the last , i'll pass again.

It's a nice hands diagram, but how about this one :

[hv=n=s8hk654dkqjcak875&w=sakj1062h3d86cj963&e=shaqj109872da543cq&s=sq97543hd10972c1042]399|300|[/hv]

is it nice defense 4 or disaster ?

lets play bridge, not World Poker Championship

Here's a good rule of thumb for considering 4 over 4 in cases like this.

If your gut tells you to bid it, then bid it. There are so many ways it can be right, and only one serious way where its wrong. If you aren't coming back with an occasional 800 in this sequences you aren't bidding enough.

There are lots of ways it can be wrong, not just one.

You go for a number.

Partner thinks your hand is better and puts you in slam down or gets to the 5 level down.

Oppositely, when you really have a hand next time partner doesn't look for slam, fearing you have this.

They bid on and partner doubles them with his spade shortness, playing you for a trick.

Mostly guess. But it appears the downside to 4S is higher than the upside.

4S works when partner has spades

Pass works when partner does not have spades

If we bid 4S, partner may dbl 5/6H and we won't know if partner is doubling partly based on our values or has an unexpected heart stack.

4S may get us too high. Partner will not know if we are bidding 4S with weakness or strength.

Pass hurts when the LHO bids 6H (or 5H and RHO raises to 6H) and now we wish we had bid 4S so opener could sac.

We don't have a slam, but they might. 4S makes it easier for them to find it.

And don't forget pushing them into a making slam...as almost happened here.

1) "almost" doesn't matter much.

2) 6S X is better than defending 4H even if they do bid 6H.

this is a situation with alot of interpretations, but if you playing with occasional opponents, you could try whatever defense plan. But is every time the defense Nonvuln vs Vuln should be taken as winning ?

a situation in another one game :

[hv=d=n&v=e&s=sa109852hk2dq2ca43]133|100|[/hv]

Your partner open 1, RHO bid 3, He is vuln, you don't,

what should you bid, i assume no pass B)

regular partner, occasional opps :P

that's the full diagram

[hv=d=n&v=e&n=skha9754dk85ckq106&w=sqj743h86d97643c2&e=s6hqj103daj10cj9875&s=sa109852hk2dq2ca43]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

i bid 3 also, ignoring Dbl bid first as unlogic, but when i saw what was 3 , softly said : oh my :)

we reached the unpleasent contract 3nt, instead of 3X for a thousands of IMPs :)
