You're playing in a KO teams match vs strong opponents and you've got a strong pair as teammates at the other table.

Partner's 4 bid shows a distributional hand - preemptive, with normally 5 card support, occasionally only 4.

Complete agree with Ron. You've got no idea if 6 is making or not, and neither do the opponents. Taking phantom sacrifices is not good bridge. For one thing partner's ace of hearts may cash, or there may be a slow diamond loser, or two club losers.

You're playing against opponents who knows what they're doing.

The bidding was the same at both tables this far. I can tell you that both east players thought they could make 6 - meaning they expected it to be at least a favourite to make.

Try constructing the east hand before you decide what to do - that might shed some light.

Skaeran is prodding us in a particular direction.

Obviously East expects to make this, since he didn't have to bid it.

If he has a real freak like xxxxxx,,AKxxxxx, do we make it more likely they bid a making seven when we bid on - probably not. So we're left with maybe -500 worst case in 7 versus a making vulnerable slam... Mmm seven Hearts it is then.

What can east have for this bid that gives up on 7?

A hand that he expect his partner to raiseto 7 with the perfect cards.

He might be lacking AK only

Qxxx

Ax

AKJxxxx

Partner might have a trump trick then, but that's our only one. Bid 7, but not sure of what.

Not far off.

East's hand was: Kxxx xxx AKJTxx -

East of course was marked with support and a long suit. I thought he was void in 's and doubled, hoping to get a lead. The operation was successful but the patient died, as west quickly cashed out all the tricks.

I didn't think too deaply, I must admit. I should have gathered that east held 3 's, making a void with west almost certain, and a void.

None have come up with the winning bid so far though.... :)

I guess bidding 5nt or something else over 4H was not a reasonable option by this very strong pair and 6S is a much better option?
