Frequent count?

I agree that it's a bad idea vs good competition, but I think it's good to play for a while in your bridge life anyway. With one partner for a long time we played only count, no attitude at all. It sounds kind of silly but it really gets you to work through hands you might have otherwise been lazy on, as well as teaching you to think about defensive problems in a different way. I'm quite sure it helped me a lot to improve.

I agree with this. Having had good results at defense all my life, I've been too lazy for such an endeavour. I'm sure I'd have profited too.
