If youre going to commit this hand to the 5 level, I like a direct 5♠.

Why? 5S will demand partner to bid 6 with a diamond control, given that I don't have solid hearts I don't want to do that. I'd much rather get the heart king into play as well.

 

Besides I have a sneaking suspicion that if someone were to post a hand like Qxxxxxx --- xxxx xx a lot of the forum regulars would bid something like 5S (not that I would, but I've noticed a huge tendency here to jump to the 5 level with a preemptive hand, including 5M openers). Of course I'm sure no one will admit to this but these "clear cut" bids aren't always so clear cut to partner ;)

I don't understand 3♦ followed by 5♠ to ask for a ♦ control, nor do I understand an immediate 5♦ to ask for a diamond control. I always thought an immediate 5♠ on this auction asked for ♦ control

I bid 2♦ first just because on competitive direct 5♠ could be taken as preemptive, but actually when RHO has passed this is not an option.
