You hold:

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=skqj983hqt6dq3ca6]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

And the auction goes:

1 - 3 - 3 - 5

Dbl - pass - ???

(1 shows 14+HCP and an unbalanced hand with 4+)

Do you think 5 is makable or not?

Pass

Partner has made a decision based on the available information to her, she did not make a forcing pass. Going for a plus score. I have no idea if 5s makes or not but I think we can beat 5 clubs.

btw "FTL" seems to say 5 spades makes.

13-4+2=11 tricks.

13=total tricks

-4= estimated combined two shortest suits.

+2=estimated combined working hcp. 28 whcp. if only 27 we should pass. :D

Mike, I find it amazing when we agree on anything, but here I agree with you.

I don't understand.

Did someone slip some LSD into my lunch?

It's been so long...

In general, I think that pulling partner's penalty double is a A Very Bad Idea, unless you have a hand which partner won't expect.

5 might make, but i can see many ways of going down (a heart ruff, a diamond ruff or even losing 2 spade tricks and another ace). I don't have anything special to pull double, and partner doesn't have also, he didn't make a forcing pass. So i'll just chalk my plus score

P's double must be a forward double since otherwise this isn't a problem. Playing standard methods, everybody passes.

If it's a forward double I can't pass. I'd probably bid 5 allthough 5 could be right. Or maybe 5N or 6, whichever means pick-a-slam.

I have a feeling this is on the wrong forum...I haven't seen an SAYC-type opening where 1 diamond promises an unbalanced 4, and I think the X must not be penalty, although I can't imagine why not. Partner should have some way of showing a singleton spade, since that's a darned likely holding for him.

There have now been two replies saying that partner's double must have been conventional in some way, otherwise how can this be a problem? That seems to sum the hand up nicely. Playing 3S = FG with 5+ spades, pass over 5C as forcing and double as penalties it's difficult to construct a more obvious pass.
