han
Unfavorable, IMPs, 1st seat. QxxxKxxxKxxxJ p - (p) - 1S - (3NT)??
helene_t
Partner won't make a funny 3rd seat opening under these circumstances, right? Anyway, I'll have to bid 4♠, can't think of any alternative. No idea whose hand it is (well I kibbitzed it so actually I do know).
han
Partner won't make a funny 3rd seat opening under these circumstances, right? Partner says he might very well. Light that is, not funny.
Fluffy
Declarer has 7-8 tricks on a spade lead, our top score is to probably double and guess wich red suit to lead, but that doesn't mean our best percentage bid is that, at 4♠ I think we lose 1 trick in each suit (or 2 in a red and none in the other), but it can make on a good day. 4♠ also might temp RHO into bidding a losing 4NT/5♣ after deep (and I bet wrong :P) analysis I bid 4♠. pclayton
Not difficult to construct hands that make 3N and 4♠, so I'll take the push.
Sambolino
4s if superior by far, only drawback could be 3rd position open. if he opened 1s on a silly hand and 4s turns out very wrong maybe it's time for him to reconsider his style. jtfanclub
Just for my own curiousity. Suppose partner opened the hand 2♠, not 1. Would you still bid on?
mikeh
4♠...not close... that is not the same as saying 4♠ has to be the winning bid: it may well be horrible, but it is not close. Lots of chances for a double game swing here, and I expect to be on lead against 5♣ very shortly... do I double it? I think so.

inquiry
4♠ as well.. At imps and unfavorable, partner will not be fooling around too wildly with his 1♠ opening bid. You have a very good hand in support of spades, and your kings rate to be well placed given the auction. To boot, you have a stiff in the suit RHO plans or running as a source of tricks. As I have been trying to rekindle a ZAR intrest, I will put this in ZAR perspective. You have 8 hcp (discount club jack), 2 control points, 11 distributional points. That comes to 21. When partner bids spades, you get 1 fit point for spade queen and 2 fit points for the stiff club. That comes to 24. One or both kings are likely to be extremely useful as the aces rate to be onside. Then you have super fit consideration. Your stiff club and one of your four card red suits are probably mis-matched, so instead of taking 3 fit points for spade queen and one club, you could try to guess the degree of fit in other suits. Partner rates to have 2/3 ♣ 5♠+, so that leaves him with 5/5/6 red cards. If you assume on average 5 red cards, you have a difference of 3 in the red suits and 1 or 2 in clubs, so you can use misfit points (4 or 5) instead of fit points (3) to climb to 25 to 26 ZAR points. This is clearly enough for game. So bid 4♠, I agree with Mike that your next decison will be what to do over 5♣ which is clearly coming. I would not double that, as I have no club trick, and no quick tricks.
jdonn
4♠ seems obvious, but I wouldn't double 5♣ I agree. Me too. Word to the wise - don't open light in 3rd seat opposite Mike :)

Thus we are not in a forcing pass situation.... so partner, with KJxxx Axx QJx xx is going to pass, and we may take a quiet 100 or 150... heck, with KJxxx AQx QJx xx he is passing, and while +300 isn't much compensation for our 620, it's better than +100... and if you guys are on the other team, it's win 5 :P Word to the wise... if josh is sitting to your left, and his partner opens in 3rd chair, you have a free pass :P :) :D :) B)

If partner has those hands, I don't think we are being realistic about there being a 5♣ bid. However I wouldn't deny if the auction went that way they could easily be down 1 or 2. Guest Jlall
What else but 4S? I also wouldn't double later but that is very much style and partnership based.
han
Well done panel. I also bid 4S which got doubled and made. Partner had a normal opening bid with KJxxx in spades and AQJxx in a red suit. 3NT would go down only if you find this suit. They can make 5C, and 7C makes unless you find the right red suit. Which would you lead? :)

dake50
3Nt because long clubs are worth 3C preempt, not 4C preempt. Stir this auction up.4S now AND X to 5C. I want a Rexford/Kantar cue 4C, may I have one?
