whereagles
3♦, because 2♦ will hardly make a difference if LHO has 3 spades. The pree forces LHO to bid 3♠, which he might not want to do with 6-7 hcp...
pbleighton
3D, because it's matchpoints. 2D if it was imps. Peter

jdonn
I was directed to this problem and agree with the person who showed me that it's a very good problem. I really think pass, 2♦, and 3♦ are all fairly close! None of them are awful. I would start with a pass and decide later if I want to enter or not depending how the auction goes. If my clubs and hearts were reversed I think I would bid 3♦, but part of the reason I pass is if I bid 3♦ now we may miss an excellent heart contract, even a game. This is not a preempt for me with an unpassed partner. An outside A and K and no AKQ in my suit. Only ♦ 10 and 9 made me think about bidding. I did not even consider a vul 2♦ overcall. Bidding went 1♠ - 3♣ (7-9 and 4+ ♠) 3♠ all pass. Do you consider bidding after 3♠ ? Selling out was not good:http://www.bridge.dk/4278/Klub1/Turneringe...illing3382.html Edit: EKDB = AKQJ :)
Fluffy
I would never consider 2♦ with this hand (too weak), pass and 3♦ seem both reasonable
han
I would pass, I don't mind 3D. I would never bid 2D with this, far from what my partners expect for a 2D bid.

Now you have made it an advanced problem so here was my partner's email bid not knowing the other hands. "1NT....it's a Hamont Lall special....I saw Justin do it in the Cavendish Pairs, on a similar hand playing with Bart Bramley. It's also known as the Garndner NT overcall......you psych a NT overcall with a weaker hand with a very long suit (usually a minor, but not always) to run out to it if need be....and generally the suit isn't all that great because otherwise, you'd just bid it in the first place....this hand is ideal for it...." btw seeing all the other hands colors my response to the question of what to do if I did pass, but I think LOTT(TNT) or FTL(Lawrence) would have you bid at MP over 3S. They are in a nine card fit and you seemed doomed to a poor score with pass.
pclayton
Pass. If pard was a passed hand I'd stick in 3♦ unless red/white. 2♦ isn't my style.
SoTired
I would bid 3D, but can understand others would not make a vul 3D bid on this suit. However, I would NEVER make a vul 2D overcall with this hand. It is not strong enough. Although I advocate weak 1-level overcalls (any 8+ hcp and any 5+ suit), my 2-level overcalls, esp vul, are sound. A 2-level vul overcall should be near an opening bid with a sound suit.
