mickyb has already posted some distributional hands from the Spring Fours. Here is another opening bid problem from Round 6 (or the quarter-finals of the plate competition in our case).

2S or 3S... wtp?

How can you say wtp when you don't even choose a bid lol.

I would pass for sure. Bad suit, tons of defense, Qxx of the other major, it has everything a preempt shouldn't.

since I am vul, i would downgrade the weak 7 carder to a 6 carder and open 2S. I was just being cute thinking about all the passers out there. But change swap out a Q for a small spade QJxxxxx Qxx Ax x and I open 3S

Pass.. you don't have to bid every hand.

Huh.

I'd open 2 myself, but if I had an agreement with partner that kept me from opening 2, I'd open 1 rather than pass.

Points schmoints. I have a 27 ZAR count (enough to open even without the Q), a great Losing Trick Count, good defense, great offense, and nice rebids. Those two 10s aren't chopped liver either. I don't think partner will be disappointed with my hand. I'm also concerned that I'm going to have a heck of a time if I start out with a pass convincing partner I have this kind of hand, especially if he opens a heart.

But then, maybe that's why I'm not an expert. :)

This is not a good hand to preempt on vul. It has numerous disadvantages.

For one thing, you are not particularily interested in suggesting a sacrafice. For another, vul preempts should be constructive as well as preemptive bids. By this, I mean your partner can count on a high Offensive to Defensive ratio. Here your hand is upside down, other than long spades, you have high defensive and low offensive values. Your partner is surely going to go wrong if he is trying to decide between bidding on or defending if he relies on the opposite nature of your hand than what you hold. And, should you be so inclined. The odds are good you will get a chance to bid again in the auction and now you will not be too misleading, to pass then bid suggest higher defensive and lower offensive values. Of course, I would not bid too much should I decide to enter the auction later.

It turns out that this is a part-score hand, so passing or opening 1 will get you a small plus by defending the opponent's contract.

The big winners are the pre-emptors. They will play in 2 or 3 doubled and make 9 tricks, as LHO has a normal takeout double and RHO has 4333 distribution with AKQx.

Flat in +870 was a common result.
