Slam?

(P)-1-(1)-X

(2)-2-(P)

1 was nat or bal, but now opener has promised an unbal hand. X showed 4+, 2 was a good raise. If you make a generic game-try of 3, pard will jump to 4 promising a 4th spade.[/hv]

It would be nice if Opener would cue his clubs if he has KQJxx, so I can bid 4 to isolate the diamond hole, show slam interest, and get cooperation.

I think I need to catch the magical: ATxx, x, Axx, KQxxx, but this is a 3 call for me. I think ATxx, x, Kx, KQxxxx is a 3 call as well.

Pard usually has a 7 loser hand. I have a 7 loser hand. We probably don't have slam.

Yet, how can 3 hurt? We can signoff over 4 and pard can still move if he 'misbid' his hand earlier :)

I agree that 3 can't hurt... I have too many controls for partner to unilaterally commit to slam even if, as it would be for me, 3 is a game force, not a game try.. just what the heck do we need a 'generic' game try for when we have the entire 3 level?

As for partner's magic hand, he sure better not bid 4 with it B) To me, 4 shows an ugly game acceptance (given the misuse of 3 foisted on us).

Over 2, the bids available were -

2NT natural+forcing

3 natural+invitational

3 ART setting spades

3 undiscussed

So I tried 3 B)

Anyways, pard jumped to 4, and I got a bit excited and put us into slam. It's a reasonable contract if pard has the 9, but it wasn't to be. I agree that I overbid, especially considering that bad breaks are to be expected for the oppos strong bidding on few HCP.
