unless your system restricts you, you HAVE TO open this one 1. You're basically sure of game. Next time you'll bid x, where x=lowest available level. Partner should realize what's going on.

when x is 5 or 6 you won't be happy

Realize that a 6-card suit with 4 honors is self-sufficent and can play opposite a void. Unless partner bids spades (showing 4+), you will play this hand in hearts. Even if partner has 3 and 1, you want to play in hearts.

So open 1H and rebid 3H unless partner responds 1S.

If partner responds 1S, you will rebid 4S. You will not splinter. SLAM is only possible if partner can cover 4 of your 5 losers. If so, partner will bid over 4S.

And you will be happy playing your 5=2 rather than your 6=2, or 5=3 rather than 6=3? When the auction escalates, shape abounds, and I'd rather be in my best suit a level higher than my second-best a level lower.

This is an easy 1, because of the suit texture. There are some 5=6 hands I open the 5 card suit, but not this one.

AKQxx Kxxxxx xx void, I open 1 and treat it for all time as 5-5, as an example

do whatever your system tell you, mine is to open 1 even with 7 .

for 56 I ahver a gaget that after 1-1NT, 4 shows 65 while 4 shows 56.

I could understand opening 1 if you didn't feel strong enough to reverse. But why not just bid your suits in natural order and reverse if you are planning on forcing to the four level anyway, rather than force an extra convention upon yourself?

Almost ruling out a higher 5 card suit after an opening helps on natural biddings, when you can rebid the 4 card suit as many times as you want when you have no better bid.

EDIT: Also helps on competition, when you know

1x-2y-ps-3y

3z

z is a 4 carder, and hand is surelly a 6-4.

I recognice I didn't even look at the hand, I just auto open all 56 with the higher, maybe this one can be opened 1 and rebid at the 4 level without a problem, I didn't even think of it.

I certainly agree with Gonzalo that whether you open 1 or 1 may be dictated by system. I note that in echo club I open 1 (showing hearts), but would also open 1 if I were 6-5 the other way around, whereas in gnome club I open 1 (showing spades!). And in response to Josh's point, I certainly understand the advantages and disadvantages with the particular openings I choose.

However... I imagine that the original poster was asking more about what one should open in a standard system and here I agree with several of the others. I think it absolutely depends on how you want to show the hand. If you feel you have enough to show your suits in natural order (e.g. reversing with this hand), then I see no reason not to do so as partner will be able to judge your hand better. However, if you feel your suit quality is different enough between the suits, then, by all means, emphasize that suit. (see Mikeh's example above) If your suit quality is more evenly matched (e.g AQTxx AJTxxx x x) and you do not have enough to reverse, then I personally would open it 1 and treat it as a 5-5 hand so that I get both of my suits across. I would hate to have to start bidding this hand as 1 with a rebid of 2.

I bid my longest suit and then my second longest suit...

Even with Kxxxx AKJTxx x x?

1 - 1NT

2?

I was more concerned with: Qxxxx, AQxxxxx, x, v.

This kind of hands I could open 1 and treat them as 46 or 47.

Scoring: Unknown

I understand all the one heart comments.

My bid may very well not be near standard but thought worth discussing:

I would try 2H with a pickup partner and assuming they do not raise me, plan on rebidding spades at some level. I am not going to defend.

I doubt the bidding is going to die at the 2 level.
