Your choice?

Obvious a choice between 2 and 2, and every one of them has some pluses and minuses

-2 is showing the hand type first, one suited hand in diamonds, shows a source of tricks for a /NT/ contract. Also when partner has 4 it will be more frequent a better partscore than 2

-2 has the big advantage of finding quickly the spade fit. One important aspect here is that, after denying exactly 4 and 4, the probability for partner to have 5 spades rather than 4 increased (29.3%- 4 cards, 48.3% -5 cards, 22.4% 6+cards). Assuming that with 6 partner would have bid once again anyway, the advantage of bidding 2 is finding a better partscore sometimes and especially, reaching a game when we would have stopped in 2 otherwise (partner is short in and has 9-10 hcp). The bad part is that partner will never know about 6th diamond.

I would bid 2. I am glad this is in advanced class so that I can discuss it.

In my partnership, 1-2 is Reverse flannery by responder, so if partner has hearts he has a good hand. This 2 bid is "cole-like" and I use a combination of natural, artificial waiting, and transfers in response to it. Opener typically has a great diamond one suiter (which can not jump to 3D as that shows 3S's and great diamonds), a balanced 17-19 (opener plans to rebid 2NT), a strong minor two suiter (opener plans on rebidding clubs), or some variety of strong hands with three card support and ruffing values (3145, 3136-- with not so good diamonds).

Over 2 partner can rebid

  • 2D - a weak hand, may have real preference for clubs, tends not to have 5 modest or longer spades
  • 2S a weak hand that wants to play 2S opposite a ballanced 17-19
  • 2NT = a transfer showing either long clubs of his own, or any game invite in spades or diamonds, or a game-force hand with a club suit (rebid 3NT)
  • 3C = slam try with diamond fit, sets diamonds as trumps
  • 3D = heart suit, GF, 5+ Spades, 5 hearts
  • 3H = game force, great five card suit or fair six card suit
  • 3S = transfer to 3NT, shows solid stopper and five spades
  • 3NT = shows five spades, positional heart stopper, 9-12 hcp
  • 2H - a waiting bid, forcing one round, but if rebids over 2NT rebid by opener it is GF. Does not promise hearts

This method give up on the ability to play precisely 2C's. With a weak hand and both minors, opener can jump to 3C over 1S, which could be too high, but so far, so good using this. Direct raise to 2S, off-shape 1NT rebid, or rebid diamonds are other options with weak minor two suiter.

If partner rebid 2D over 2C I will pass.

If partner rebids 2H over 2C, I will bid 2S

If partner rebids 2S over 2C, I will either pass (we do have at least 8), or on a wild day, rebid 3S (this hand is a little light for the 3S rebid).

If partner bids 2NT over 2C, I will comply and rebid 3C

If partner rebids 3C over 2D, I will be happy.

If partner rebids 3D over 3C, I will bid 3S

If partner rebids 3H over 3C, I will bid 3S

If partner rebids 3S over 3C, I will bid 4S

If partner rebids 3NT over 3C, I will bid 4S

2, what else? :D

EDIT: Ok, 1NT is an alternative, but its a bit risky.

1Nt is alternative like 6NT is...very bad.

.

6NT would be raised even if it was a make, so onl way to win is if you have cold 13 tricks.

1NT has many ways to win :)

Uh....if the opponents revoke, or get lost on the way to the game, it could win. Otherwise there is no realistic way for 1NT to win.

Ok, this discusion is ridicoulous but fun :(, just give you 1 example: 1NT lets you play in clubs while 2 and 2 don't
