the hog
1D 2C = GF 2D = 16-21 any dist 2M = natural 2M = 12-15, natural or any 5332 2S = seminatural, asking, now..................................2NT = 5332, 3M = short in that suit, 3N = 5422 2N = both majors stopped - continuations a bit like the above 3D = 5+C 3+ D 3H = 4H no S stop 3N = 4H with S stop
whereagles
So the point is to use the catch all 2♦ for strong hands, rather than weaker ones? Seems playable, though won't become very popular due to extra memory work needed :)
inquiry
I am not entirely sure I would like to play 1D-2C as 100% game forcing. Two clubs is often under pressure with a fair quality suit and less than game forcing values. Also, even if 2D was GF, I think lumping all strong hands into 2D without regard to shape will put you a bid short in the auction. If 2C is Game force, opener can describe distribution first, and then, show extra value via a strong bidding structure afterwards (raising 3NT to 4NT naturally, or otherwise bidding beyond 3NT for instance). The jumps in a major to show no stop are geared towards getting to 3NT from the right side I guess, and if you open all hands with a five card major 1M might work ok. But, if you have to jump to bid 2D with all 16 hcp and jumps to 3M show weakness. How do you describe a nice 5-6 hand with 18 hcp. 1D-2C2D -3C You have not shown you major yet, 3M might be 4 cards, might be 5 cards, more often it is a stopper. I think the system is flawed, the advantage of getting info on 16 hcp is just not enough to make me happy.
the hog
Just a couple of comments in reply to Ben. The Poles who play this structure DO play that if you have a 5 card major, it must be opened. evened with a 5-6.They also play that a 1D - 3C jump is invit, with 6C.Given these constraints, the structure seems to work quite well.
