I managed somehow to land in 2 (well, my partner with the heart void landed there) and half the rest of the field bid slam, one bid 5 and everyone else bid 4. Sadly, in 2 my partner went off two, and someone in 4 managed to go down only two.

Just thought it was an interesting one.

Nice

But it does seem that getting out for 4spades down one or two is at least possible at the table? They do not have to defend perfectly.

It seems my hand weak hand is worthless in hearts, and may play better in spades..maybe.....But then I do not see one pair in 4 spades, oh well.

4: Is Qxxxx of diamonds and out 0 tricks for hearts? Hey just asking!

It was matchpoints, not imps. At imps, I would never "risk" a pass. The 1H bid denies two queens. So he might have one queen (jnot in hearts), so if he had one, it was twice as likely to be in a black suit as in diamonds.

At imps, our bidding would most likely have been

2C - 2H

3H - 3S

4D - 4S/4H

Pass

Where, 2H is no tricks for a heart contract, at most 1 trick for spades

3H = hearts, and game force

3S = not only no tricks, no support. I have some spades

4D = Second suit. Since we play Misiry, x-6+-4-y. That is 6 or more hearts, exactly 4 diamonds.

4S/4H = either in a despirate hope partner will pass.

Should partner have Qxxxxx of diamonds, game would be reached in diamonds.

A few months ago I was playing with a new pd. The auction went 2C-2D(waiting)-2S-3C-3S-AP. She bid 3C as a second negative, I thought it was a suit. I had AKQ10xx, and a great hand. The dummy came down, I thought we had slam easy. It turned out Jxxx of spades was on my left, and we were missing an ace (but had all 4 kings). Almonst everyone else was in 6S-1, 90%.

"Just bridge" :D

Three questions:

What's the missing -100 result?

Where was this board "played"?

Who invented this zero tricks for hearts treatment?

1. What was the other -100

Whoops, I missed one, there were two 4 down two, to go along with my partners 2 down two.

2. Where was this board played?

BBO in an 11 table swiss pairs event last night.

3. Who invented it

Chris Ryall this is a link describing it

Yes they work very well but since I only play a strong 2 opener with one regular partner the whole 2 opening bid comes up rarely for me. So far it came up once and was very good for me also

I really dislike 2nd negative. You need all the space you can get for natural bids after 2 and reserving one for a 2nd negative instead of the suit spells trouble. I know, not playing Paradox you have to distinguish strengths...

Catch this at a local club: you play safe to make 3X +1, vuln. A top? Not at all. Score sheet is:

3X +1 (you)

3X +2

4X +1

3X =

actually, it's a cold zero :P

Bottom line is "no matter who bad opps screwup, there's always someone who manages to screwup even more"

My favourite 'I thought it was a cold top' hand is one I have bored many people with over the years... not sure if I've posted it here before... if so, I apologize and will mentally note that the story has outlasted its 'best before' date.

Playing a sectional pairs event, scored on a 12 top... years before computer scoring made across-the-field the norm... we reached 7N... LHO doubled... he was visibly trembling as he extracted a card from his hand. His card ... the A.. touched the table just as my arm was raised and I called the director for a lead out of turn.

The director gave my partner, the actual declarer, his options and he wisely chose to forbid a lead, whereupon we wrapped up 13 top winners.

Ok, I thought: that's 12 in the bank. Wrong: it was 11... not that anyone did better than 7N x'd making off an ace... but that 2 other pairs in this 13 table section pushed the result.

My partner had miscounted Aces in response to keycard.. I have no idea how the other two pairs duplicated our idiotic result :)

My favorite was in a national pairs, when an opponent unwisely doubled our 3 in a relay auction. We sent it back, and I safety played the hand for 3XX+1. Top?

No, a dead average. Half the field was in 6NT making, half in 3NT making six.

I made a rutinary endplay in 6 last week on my local, bidding a slam there is normally a top already, I didn't expect more than 1 to tie. But actually I only beated those who were playing 7 B).

Things go different on a national tourney, We bid 1-2-4NT-5x-6, and get 94% for making a safey play in trumps. (xxx opposite AK10xx).

Dafdy failed to make it because he though side suit was more likelly to be 5-1 after it was led hehehe.
