Play this 4S

I'd probably win the A and run the J immediately.

If the J loses to the queen then I'm basically playing for hearts to be 3-3, but there will be some additional chances that I can work out later.

If the J holds then I'll run the T next. Again, I haven't worked out all the chances but it looks pretty good. (It's probably guaranteed at this point unless trumps are 1-4).

Win the A, cash the K, and run the J.

Lots of permutations, as usual. If the Q drops on the K, then abandon trump and run the 9.

If the Q appears on my right on the second round, win the A, cross in s and run the 9, leaving a trump out temporarily.

If the Q wins the next trick, with RHO showing in, then he probably returns a major.. altho he may be able to play Q and a , making me guess whether to ruff or pitch... I'd ruff and then play on s... again, the permutations are too numerous to fully detail.

If the trump finesse wins, and LHO shows in, I'd draw the last trump and play a to dummy and run the 9. What I do after that depends on what happens

If the trump finesse wins and LHO shows out, I run the 9 immediately, leaving Qx of trump outstanding. This is an ugly scenario, and is the main reason for at least considering taking a first round trump finesse.. 4-1 onside with Qxxx is far more likely than stiff Q offside... but if the J wins, I'm probably going to cash the K next anyway, and that gets me back to the equivalent position, except that now I will have lost to the stiff Q if it exists offside.

Anyway... further thought might persuade me to change this line, but I try to solve these in the time I'd spend at the table..... altho I type one heck of a lot more slowly than I think... not because I think fast but because I type slow :)

West held

Partner had just gone to the bar and Martin Hoffman sat in to play dummy's cards. So, no pressure there. I played A K J. I wasn't sure my line was the best line at the time and I'm still not sure. Martin H passed no judgement :(
