New Forum Software

Recommended Posts

Hi, Wayne, and many thanks for your software and sources.

Erkson I have sent you a copy of my code.

It is better than mine. I appreciate the Windows GUI, and I adopt it !

Please, add me on your list for updates.

You get slightly better alignment when you use the {FONT=Courier} tag.  But there are still minor problems.  I think they are caused by suit symbol images being different sizes.

A table tag would be ideal.

I do agree with you.

Anyway, we have now a good tool to publish deals on this forum.

One problem remains : to deal with at least three different .lin file types.

I haven't looked at the details but I suspect something smart should be able to be programmed.

That is some code that automatically recognizes the format and deals with it.

Some simple infos :

A vugraph lin file begins with :

vg|

a movie.lin file with :

vg|Uploaded

a history.lin with :

pn|

Then :

- only vugraph says if IMP or MP

- vugraph and movie have a qx tag, but history hasn't

- vugraph and history have the same hand and auction notations, but movie has different

Modification of a program is easy to make it to read vugraph and history.lin because they are not very different.

It is a little bit harder to make it to read also movie.lin. But movie.lin hand notation is easier to manage : all 4 hands are there, and cards are in descendant order.

I wouldn't rush because when we finish a multi-lin program, maybe BBO has standardised the format :rolleyes:

Here is the output from the three file types with one program.

The program automatically detects the file type.

1.

movie.lin a movie created manually using the movie feature and saved to your hard disc.

2.

history.lin a file downloaded from myhands

3.

logged_deal.lin a file logged on your computer as you play or watch a hand

Questions:

Does anyone know if history.lin files store the scoring condition in any way?

I can probably look and find out for myself I guess.

I discovered while writing this post that hard spaces do not cut and paste very well from the post preview. They turn into soft spaces :-(

I discovered a 4th type of lin file just now.

If I look at a movie from a played table and save that to my hard drive.

This file has some different characteristics.

I think I have updated the program to cope but I have not double checked that it still works with the previous file types.

Wonderful job, Wayne !

It doesn't.

To know the scoring condition you need to read the

Bridge Base Online - Hand Viewer.htm

page, on which you clicked to get the history.lin

I saw that reading the page source. But if they actually turned into soft spaces, a serie of those spaces would be displayed as a single space, which doesn't happen.

The source shows soft spaces but they are hard ones. A mystery.

I clicked on a tourney, chose a table, clicked on MOVIE, on SAVE, and got this file (I deleted names):

vg|Uploaded Deal,,I,7,7,,,,,|rs|,,|pn|....|pg||qx|o7|

md|1SK964HA62DKT763C9,SA2HJT975DJ9C7543,

SJ87DAQ52CAQJ862,SQT53HKQ843D84CKT|

sv|b|

pn|........|

mb|---pp1C1H2D2H3D3H4Dppp-|pg||

pc|SA|pc|S7|pc|S3|pc|S4|pg||

........

The difference with this other movie.lin (I can't remember how I got it !) :

vg|Uploaded Deal,,I,3,3,,,,,|rs|5CWxx=,,|pn|....|pg||qx|o3|

md|1S3HJ76432DAQ32CA3,SA2HAQ9D4CQJ96542,

SKJT9875HT85D97C7,SQ64HKDKJT865CKT8|

sv|e|

mb|---1H2C4H5Cdrppp|

pn|.....|pg||

pc|H5|pc|HK|pc|H2|pc|H9|pg||

.....

and a deal created using MOVIE and SAVE :

vg|,,P,1,1,,0,,0|

rs|,,|

pn|,,,,,,,|

mp|,|

pw|,,,|pg||

qx|o1|st||md|3DAKQJT98765432,CAKQJT98765432,SAKQJT98765432,HAKQJT98765432|nt||sv|0|pg||

is the place of sv| and second pn| tags.

Is that what you mean ?

When BBO standardise its lin format, I will dance in the street.

I discovered while writing this post that hard spaces do not cut and paste very well from the post preview.  They turn into soft spaces :-(

This is a test of the preview function

First I write 4 bids separated by 6 soft spaces :

1 1 1 1

Then I write 4 bids separated by 6 hard spaces :

1     1     1     1

I will read the source made by BBO Forum software for this post with preview and then without preview, and see if there is a different result for the first auction line and the second one.

Now without preview :

This is a test of the preview function

First I write 4 bids separated by 6 soft spaces :

1 1 1 1

Then I write 4 bids separated by 6 hard spaces :

1      1      1      1

Results of the test :

The preview replaces & #160;  by a space, which is displayed as a hard space.

If you don't use the preview : & #160; are preserved in the source.

But in both cases if you cut and paste a post you loose the hard spaces, because cut and paste of a html page doesn't cut and paste the html tags but the text.

You can now see your voter's names.

But I think I mentioned this may be removed if it leads to unpleasant results.

The problem with votes right now is that you don't really know what they are used for, and even if voters knew exactly what they are used for, they can still vote for whatever they want according to an individual agenda that isn't the "purpose" of the vote. But we never had a stated purpose either, except that it was for indicating good posts/posters.

The idea was that this could be used to make particularly good posts appear more prominently, *somewhere*. Our problem is we haven't been able to do this. If voters know what the vote would be used for (ie, make a post appear in a very prominent and significant position) would it make voters vote responsibly? This is what we plan for votes and the best BBF posts...

Downvoting is no longer enabled (You can still vote up posts).

There is a newcomer group for all newcomers. After they've been around a while and posted a bit, they will be promoted to full members.

(The newcomer criteria may need adjustment at times.)
