opinion needed --can TD boot people from tournament ?

Recommended Posts

1) Is it right for TD to boot someone who has somehow managed to sneak into his tournament and doesn't fulfil the criteria he sets?

Eg : Tourney lists clearly, for Beginners. Expert joins tourney. TD doesn't like it, subbed him out.

Opinion? Who is right, who is wrong?

I agree 100%

Players SHOULD read the Tournament description .

One has to presume that they DON'T :-

My Director and I actually cancelled our Friday tournament immediatley after the start and reset it in order to get rid of the invaders.

I had set it to restrict to my members - and checked & double checked !! - somehow (software glitch) that wasn't happening.

The astonishing thing was that the name of the tournament said BEG/INT LOUNGE - now even supposing that someone didn't translate that to mean Beginner Intermediate I had also typed into the description panel - Restricted to members of the Beginner Intermediate Lounge !!

There were dozens of them that had totally ignored that !!

This was the second time that this has happened and I think it is probably a bit like the tournament countdown clock - unstable until within 24 hrs of the start time. So I will be checking that from now on as well as the clock.

Nothing though can make me understand why anyone would even attempt to enter any tournament unless they meet the criteria laid down by the TD.

Players have to learn to respect the time GIVEN to them by the TD's If booting them out of Tournaments (when their Profiles clearly show that they do not meet the restrictions for that Tournament ) is the only way to educate them - THEN BOOT THEM !!

Hi,

I think directors have every right to replace players who do not fit the requirements spelled out in their condition of contest.

I tried one of the first beginner/intermediate tourments in June 2003 on the BBO and while everyone had fun, about half of the players where "expert or advanced". I spent all day responding to people who told me their opponents were "expert" and why where they playing. The discussion of this event can be found at http://forums.bridgebase.com/in...msg3582#msg3582

When the BBO allowed tournments limited to private clubs, walla, the idea of the Beginner/Intermediate lounge was born. But it took Hallway to make the dream a reality.

I find the same problem with the lesson hands and questions posted in the BBO forum (these use to be called good idea #x, or beginner's guides to ____ where blank was balancing, scrambling, signalling, etc. The problem with those post was that experts would jump in and solve the problems despite being labelled for beginners and intermediates (obviously, they would not be difficult for experts). The Beginner/Intermediate forum solves this problem too by allowing lessons in an atmosphere where the experts do the teaching and the "students" of the game do the problem solving. The private club owner (in this case) can deal with people who don't follow the rules the same way that the TD can do in a tournment, by kicking them out.

I've not heard anyone else suggest that the restrict-to-members-of-private club is not working.

I do know that creating a T with a beta, then allowing edits with an older client (perhaps the director) is a bad idea; this wipes out the new-client stuff.

About booting: TDs are donating time, and as long as they are not frivolous or obnoxious about booting, I'm fine a TD booting players from a T. Eventually, people will work out to stay away from TDs w/excessive boots, maybe. I dont see why or how we should/could make TDs give time for the benefit of people they want to boot out of their Ts anyway.

I think all directors have right to remove violators. But at least tell them why they getting booted and be civilized about it. Sometimes people just click wrong tourney. But you also have repeat violators that think it is funny, most likely alcohol induced, and I generally bar them from my tourney for a while. And I leave them a message to let them know why. I still believe in the good of people even though it has been tested lately :D But all the happy responses always make it my worth while

  • 3 weeks later...

I task that the TD has the duty to assure regulating development of the tourney therefore if the tourney it is for beginner/novice, the expert, the advanced and the intermediate one is outside therefore thinks is right after to have communicated why the intruder to replace it
