In theory you can not. This allows the following type of auction...

1S - 3S

4N - 5C (0 or 3 keys)

5S - 6S

where 6S bidder has 3 keys, he would pass 5S with zero.

On your auction, I am confused. What the bleep was 5C over 4NT? 1 or 4 key cards? Surely the heart ACE must be one. If his partner has one key card, why didn;t EAST bid 5D over 5C to discover the spade queen.

On the bright side for EW, given the 5=0 trump split, 5S is better than 7S. "lucky" Ew didn't get to 7S, unlucky they missed six.

I'd for sure end up in 7 and go down on this layout.

Looks like west used 1430 and east 0314 BW, but maybe some other wheel fell off....

BTW, I'd never raise to 4 with the west hand. 2 is GF to me, and the west hand is too strong for a jump to game. I'd raise to 3, and start a cuebidding sequence. East would bid 3NT (serious).

I haven't and don't need to look at the hand given or any of the posts to respond to this question.

Use RKC when you intend to bid slam as long as you're not off two keycards. If you aren't sure whether or not to bid slam upon discovering that you hold all the keycards, then you shouldn't have bid RKC.

So they clearly aren't real experts. But they aren't cheats either, or they'd have played 6NT or 6S (6NT is easier to play, 6S is more fun but looks pretty solid).

Assuming you were NS (as I trust you were), I imagine this was not one of your better results. My condolences. Playing online requires an appreciative sense of the absurd.

Notice that I resisted the urge to give the obvious answer to your question: "By signing off in 5S." Oops. My resistance faded.

Added: Ah ha. I just read Frances' post. She appears to be right. 6S is on ice. They screwed up. Good result your way :P-
