4NT overcall

Recommended Posts

4NT should be an extreme two-suiter. Usually the minors, but possibly may be a minor/major if he/she expected the bidding to reach the 5 level due to the extreme shape of their hand.

Of course, what 4NT means in your partnership depends on your partnership agreement.... but with a random person on BBO, i'd take it to be a two-suiter.

BBO online.

LHO bids 1H, partner overcalls 4NT and RHO passes. To you.

What is 4NT? Blackwood? Minors? What?

Is there any obvious/standard treatment in "SAYC"?

Zia in the Bermuda Bowl and equivalent events has played 4nt is always 100% blackwood...That is playable with agreement no matter what anyone says. This was with a young Paki team.

Such bids are so infrequent that they have no significant effect on the final result of any tournament. If winning players play something unplayable here, no one would notice.

That said, anything but an extreme 2-suiter in the minors would be a surprise.

I'd more than mildly surprised if my partner didn't have a big minor two suiter when bidding 4NT here.

Me too.

It can never be major/minor after a 1H opening. You can bid 4H instead to show spades plus a minor.

I seriously doubt anyone above a beginner level (Zia included) would currently treat this as anything other than minors.

You did say a young Paki team, Mike....how long ago was that? Zia isn't exactly a spring chicken anymore.
