pick a partscore

I like a pass of 1NT. Partner has something in spades wasted opposite my singleton, and probably has something in clubs (the suit he opened). The 10 may help if the opponents lead spades. The diamonds here are very good and if partner has some diamond holding like xxx or Qx they are a great source of tricks.

It seems unlikely to me that we "belong" in hearts, since partner could've bid 2 with three hearts and weakish spades, and my heart suit is not strong enough to make a 5-2 desirable. There is also no guarantee that partner has a true balanced hand in this auction; I would bid 1NT with various 4-2-2-5 and even 4-1-3-5 patterns.

With more scattered values (say x KTxxx KQxxx xx) I would tend to bid 2, but with one suit that can run opposite small cards and another than lacks any high honor, I prefer the 1NT contract.

I know this is another thread and it's not the same deal as the last neg. x one, but

-does p promise a stop?

-can p rebid 2 on 3 cards?

-what did the original X show? reds or only 4+ hearts?

etc.

(in case this is confusing, this means ....

stop -- judgment

2 on 3 --- judgment

the X --- 4+ hearts, a normal negative double)

IMO 1NT is probably the best partscore but a pass will leave us poorly placed if LHO bids 2. If we bid 2 now we can certainly bid 3 over 2, but 2 may be a very poor contract if partner has fewer than three. I am pretty sure that I would bid 2 at the table; we can still get the 5-5 picture across by bidding 2NT over an opponent's 2 bid. This will also never be a 5-1, and partner may take a preference with 3-2 in the red suits.
