Suffering from insomnia I signed up for this indy too, it was awful and I had to exit before it finished.

Removing the option to run indys clocked and forcing all to be run unclocked would alleviate the problems.

Making all such tourneys as unclocked is NEVER going to be a good solution. I hate playing in them both as a player and as a yellow when there is problems i get called to a tournament for, it is essentially ALWAYS for a clockless one.

For what it is worth, the "problem" in this tournament occurred in round 3, where five tables did not bid or play \either board of that round (5 out of 47 tables). This was the only round with such problems. I don't know (I was ASLEEP when this tourney was played) maybe the bbo had connection problems then, maybe the director was having connection problems, or perhaps there was no AVAILABLE substititues and the director was trying like crazy to find some. You have to realize if there are no substitutes available, there is nothing a director could do. We also don't know how many tables the director DID FIND substitutes for.

This wasn’t the only problem in the tournament, people were leaving in round 1, me included. After playing 2 boards we were looking at waiting I think it was 10+ minutes until the next round. People were calling for subs, the td was playing and so that it seemed likely we would wait the full 10mins.

Forcing the entire field to wait until all tables are finished compounds any sub problem for the TD, faced with a long wait fast players will leave, especially if they have had a bad first round. I’m not saying this behavior is right however in unclocked indys the field moves in groups so fast players play with fast players and only a handful of tables are held up, if any.

I didn’t know unclocked indys cause more problems for yellows, heaven knows I don’t want to make life more difficult for them. They are after all, the very best feature on BBO

Unclocked can be just as bad - indeed I played with Kathryn in an unclocked pairs tourney just a couple of days ago. At the end, one player, in a bad contract (and with 2 more boards to play), apparently decided to stall. TD was AWOL, possibly a connection problem. Eventually a yellow was called and averaged the remaining board(s), with the clock ticking down to -4 or so. The other players at the table had been sitting idle and helpless for something like 20 minutes (and for all I know could have been there for another 20).

I shall try to avoid this host's tournaments in future.

and 47 tables with a playing TD?

hell, as a NON-playing TD I restrict to 40 tables.

Or set a maximum time per board for clocked tourneys. It may be ok to extend 7 minutes to 8 or maybe even 9 in case of massive connection problems, but after that everybody should get ave.

Clocked or unclocked isn't important. Both tourneys will have problems if a TD doesn't show up or loses connection.

When I'm aware of a TD who isn't active (still sitouts, no subbing of reds, not responding to calls) I sometimes ask a yellow to make me TD and I will make it possible for the players to play the remaining boards. This doesn't work if yellows aren't available or allowed to sub the TD.

Therefore I would prefer to have an automated procedure in these cases:

TD's who are willing to help in emergencies can register as a general sub-TD for (free) tournaments.

If a TD is inactive for x minutes, the software will add one or more (not playing or directing) TD's to the TD-list of the tournament.
