Pattern Precision

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know about a version of Precision Club called Pattern Precision in which their response to 1C shows their hand pattern? The system was devised mostly by Jack Hawthorne who plays it with Paul Spier. They are from the Phoenix area.

I havn't seen this but the following scheme is based on the same idea.

In reply to 1 opening

1 Negative all other responses GF

1 Only one 5 card or longer suit, no singleton / void

1 No 5 card or longer suit ( This allows opener to rebid 1nt and avoids weak hand playing nt games when balanced.)

4441 hands are included in the 1 response. Opener rebids 1NT and responder rebids 2 to show this hand type. Opener relays with 2 and responder bids the suit below the singleton.

Responses from 1NT to 2 are transfers showing 5+ no other 5+ card suit and a singleton / void elsewhere

2 5+/ 5+ in minors

2NT 5+ / 5+ at least one Major.

Opener can relay for distribution, controls, by accepting transfer or relaying over the 1 response, or bid naturally.

I have had very good success with the following responses to the 1C opening without showing the suit:

1D - Artificial, 0-6 HCP.

1H - Artificial, 7-8 HCP, forcing to 2NT.

1S - Artificial, 9-12 HCP, denies 6 clubs, diamonds, or hearts, game forcing.

1NT – No 5-card suit, balanced, 13-14 HCP or 19-20 HCP.

2m - 5+ card suit. 9+ HCP with 6+ cards in the m or 13+ HCP with a 5-card suit, game forcing.

2H - 5+ card suit. 9+ HCP with 6+ cards in the Hs or 13+ HCP with a 5-card suit, game forcing.

2S - 5+ card suit 13+ HCP.

2NT - No 5-card suit, balanced, 15-16 HCP or 21-22 HCP.

3C - 4-4-1-4, 9+ HCP, short Ds.

3D - 4-1-4-4, 9+ HCP, short Hs.

3H - 1-4-4-4, 9+ HCP, short Ss.

3S - 4-4-4-1, 9+ HCP, short Cs.

3NT – No 5-card suit, balanced, 17-18 HCP or 23-24 HCP.

4NT – Blackwood.

I got this idea from the following very interesting Website: http://members.cox.net/4evanb/

The pair mentioned above (Jack Hawthorne and Paul Spier) won the Red Ribbon pairs at the recent St Louis nationals using "pattern precision" which they credited as giving them a big step up. They had 4 sessions of 57% or better to win it. See page 1 of the daily bulletin on Saturday, March 17, 2007.

What i ment as not a good idea is to show shape but not give your suits, for example 1 show any 9+ hcp with 5any4any.

I think this kind of bidding although would probebly give the same result on uncontested auction would be bad in contested one.

Then there is Ultra Club with transfers and hand pattern:

Responses to 1:

1 = 0-7 hcp

1 = 8+ hcp & 5-card Black suit or 11-14 NT

1= 8+ hcp & 5-card red suit

1NT = 7+ hcp & 5-5 distribution Hxxxx or better

2= 8+ hcp & any 6-card suit only interested in game

2 = 8-10 NT

2 =8+ hcp & any 4441       2/27/08 Correction

2 = 8+ hcp  &  5m440        2/27/08 Correction

2NT = 15+ hcp                    2/27/08 Correction

3 = 8+ & 7-cards missing 1 of 3 top honors

3NT = 12+ hcp Any Solid Suit AKQxxxx

4 = 6-7 hcp Reverse Namyats, 8-card suit no outside A/K
