Elimination Tournaments

Recommended Posts

Silly question here:

Can anyone please explain the attraction of the new "Elimination" style tournaments?

I would think that this would make the movement much more complex, increasing the chance of playbacks. Furthermore, this doesn't match any "real-world" tournaments that I'm used to.

Any reason why this was implemented? Is this "just" a response to "drop outs" by pairs who have been knocked out of contention?

No; the purpose of the elimination movement is to serve as the backbone of an automated (undirected) tourney. It has some entertaining side effects, which make it fun for humans, but when the next client gets out of Beta, I expect to be experimenting with some fully atuomated events to see what I've missed.

While I don't like the idea of completely automated tourneys, this format is useful, because it reduce stress on the directors while maintaining the tourney interesting.

For (almost) completely automated tourneys, timestamping as chess servers do (players time, discounts lag) would [be needed/make a HUGE difference].

Good job with sub management!

;) I adore this new format

I see MANY upsides to this.

Namely if you in tournament and you/you partner is not doing good then you is excuse vs force to endure horrid rounds of torture.

Many good points to this format like...

players is free to go play in other event,

players is free to go sub

tds is under less pressure and is able to administer tournament better

number of intentional boots go to zero in later rounds for all who remain is in competition.

While some maybe do not like this format I think it is very fun and approach "knock out" format (50% per round starting in round 1)

Variety is good (i think) and this new tool is growing in populaitiy i think

Bring up tourney edit interface.

Where it says "survivor" and %, adjust the % till you get what you want.

Remember that every round the % you entered is cut off...so if you put like, 50% and you have 60 tables in play, soon you'll have very few tables, lol.

And I'm not sure adjusting % all the time is good. (Unless you have announced it prior to start of tourney) Its bad to keep changing rules arbitarily...

  • 3 weeks later...

Like the tourney for one reason mostly. If players do bad they want to leave and during regular tourneys many do, leaving director in a mess trying to find subs. For playing in it, if I do bad I will be dropped out soon and can do other things.

Mike
