As much as I like this hand, RHO didn't raise spades. Therefore, its possible pard has some duplication there.

I used to blast into game on hands like this, because I have "5 losers", but I kept getting dummies with xxx.

I don't really like HSGT's, but it seems perfect for this hand.

You use Bergen Raises, so pard does not have 4 trumps.

I can think of all sorts of hands that have 4 trumps that would bid 2, even with Bergen raises.

If I'm playing 'garbage' raises, I'd consider a pass...way too likely to be wastage, and I don't like the points being to my left. Otherwise, looks perfect for help suit game try.

[hv=d=n&v=b&s=shaqt54daq7cq9865]133|100|Scoring: IMP

Pard deals and passes

p - p - 1H - (1S)

2H - p - ?

Pard has 3 trumps.

Bergen raises (as commonly defined) do not apply in competitive auction.

I've certainly never seen Bergen advocate using them in this way.

There are a variety of treatments where a raise to 3 would promise 4 card Hearts support, however, these are typically some species of fit jump that show Club length and Heart length.

I like the 3 bid

I wish I could bring myself to pass, and at mps, I would. However, we are at imps and red so I have to make a move. I am a big fan of just bidding game if a random decent raise will give us play, but that is not the case here. So I will haul out science via 3.

BTW, and irrelevant to my answer, I truly do not like Bergen in competition and like it even less by a passed hand, competitive or not. Fit showing jumps are much more useful, in my opinion.

3. A vulnerable game at IMPs is too good to miss. Game will obviously depend on what partner has in clubs. He is likely to have a fistful of spades (no raise), so his shape is most likely 5323 or 5332.

On a bad day 3 is too high (KQ or KJ) and repeated trump leads, on a normal day it's not unreasonable to hope for 9 tricks, and on a good day like today he has the values I need for game to make.
