I have a minimum, with another spade still pass.

With Kx KQxxxx Axx xx you still pass? Hmm :unsure:

sorry, I meant 3 :P, anyway that's a matter of agreements If you make A the queen or a small a , I won't bid 2

I vote for 3 as well as the majority, but I think this is less clear than the poll results and comments above suggest. Sure I am minimum for my 2 bid. But I do have a sound opening hand (at least by my standards) so my overcall is not as weak as suggested. In addition, I have a singleton. I usually accept most limit raises with a singleton and virtually all with a singleton and a sixth trump (if I had opened). And while my heart suit is "ratty" (no intermediates), partners raise removes the concern over lack of intermediates. This overcall on KQxxxx can now be viewed through rose-colored glasses as an overcall on KQT987 (that is, the raise removes concern about the quality of the suit).

However, partner could be under some pressure with his invitaional bid here. He might have strained to raise to 3 to keep the auction open. So I am willing to be a little hesitant being not vulnerable. Second, I don't like three cards in the two side suit. I would much prefer to be 4-2 in the minors (keep ace in the longer suit). If we were vulnerable here at imps, bidding only 3 would be a good bit harder due to the factors mentioned in the first paragraph--but I would probably still only bid 3 even then.

You hold:

[hv=d=e&v=e&s=skhkq9632da63c654]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

Sitting South the auction starts:

1 - 2 - pass - 2

pass - ???

Do you accept the invitation?

I know this hand. :unsure:

I would simply bid 3H also.

This was my hand as his partner. This is like the 3rd board we had played together, ever.

[hv=d=e&v=e&s=skhkq9632da63c654]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

I could raise 3H to 4. I chose not to based on the 3-3-4-3 distribution and the 3H rebid. The only reason you can make four is because you can get an unlikely pitch on the spade A. Wouldn't you also bid 2H on x KQxxxx Axx xxx? But now 4H has no valid play. Of course, the field is in 4H making on these hands.

Besides, you did well to make 5. :P

(Don't ask how, LOL).

Surely this is a non problem. If overcaller bids 3H, which he should, this hand has a clear 4H raise over a vulnerable 2H overcall. 5 controls!

If it passed partner's 3H bid this is very poor hand evaluation.

How much weaker do you think the cuebidding hand can be? It should never be weaker than this, without compensating shortness somewhere, imo. On the 3-3-4-3 pattern, with the opening bidder over it, this hand is nowhere near as good as you are attempting to imply that it is. This, assumes of course, that a raise to 3H is invitational (as it should be) and not preemptive. The cuebid at this point should say, I can almost bid 4H on my own, unless you have a real bad overcall. If all partner can do is bid 3H, I am going to trust him and pass.

Bidding 4H is even worse hand evaluation, imo. Not to mention a break in partnership discipline. I do not know Free's overcall style. I suspect that it is nowhere near as disciplined as mine would be for a w/r overcall (but thats just a guess). But to bid 4H after being told that his overcall isn't that good is simply playing one handed. Maybe you like that, but I dont.

"You clearly have as much idea of what you are talking about as the man in the moon." Quote Papa the Greek.

The reason for going via the 2S bid is to show that the raise is made on high card strength and not length to allow pd to make a sensible decision if the opps decide to sacrifice. 2S shows a limit raise or better and this hand is far too good to pass 3H. Note that even without the "wasted" K of S 3NT makes on the 4-3 C break. Vul overcall or nv overcall, this hand is worth 4H.

"Maybe you bid like that, but I dont."

Maybe you will after playing for a few more years; don't give up yet.
