Whooie, am I outvoted. I'm the penalty double (natural, according to the given agreements). If this is followed by three passes I won't like it but I doubt it will be. My next call is 3S. Whatever partner thinks I am doing, he is likely to make the correct choice. I need him to have something if I am to take ten tricks. I would think such a sequence would say exactly that. Of course if his something is in diamonds, this may not work so well.

Okay I am the second lonesome cowboy. My pd won`t expect so much defence after my 4 Spade bid, so I would start with 2 Spade. I believe that this is a hand where we should gain more from slow bidding then our opps will gain.

What makes you think that you will get another bite of the cherry?

Pass (1NT) ?

1NT=12-14[/hv]

At the table we were a first-time partnership playing 2=majors and the rest natural. Your call?

I would never X and then bid 3 with a new partner- I don't know what I'd say over 5.

There's other issues too...does X followed by 3 forcing choice of games (5 spades, about 18 hcp) or nonforcing (6 spades, about 15 hcp). Or...could it be Splinter if partner bid 2? And with a void and a 7 card suit and one of the opponents being balanced, I'm expecting some seriously frisky bidding here. Without any partnership understandings or agreements, this is dangerous ground.

I believe in KISS with a new partnership with no agreements. 4. With a regular partner, well, hopefully I have some agreements on this auction.

After posting my thoughts I got to worrying about some of the possibilities mentioned. However when partner looks at his stiff spade and hears me bidding 3S I think he can work out that it is not a splinter. Maybe, maybe not. That he might think that I am saying "I am sure we belong in game but I am only strongly suggesting spades" is, I suppose, a problem. Still, doubling and then jumping in a suit sets trump where I come from.

Mostly when I play pick-up I avoid conventional calls, but I trust he can work out the implications of a natural call. Not always true of course, but often it is.

My partner, and her regular partner later agreed, bid 3 and played there. As Mickyb surmised, the problem with this bid is that we all play it differently. Of course I could still have raised to prevent the missed game.

At the time I thought I would have overcalled 4, but (to my mind) the 'double and 3' bidders have had the better of the argument.

Paul, I think you have a clear 4 call over 3. Maybe your requirements for a jump overcall over a weak NT are different than mine though.

At the time my reaction was "I hope she makes this" but I agree that a 4 call is right even opposite myself!
