the hog
Well with my pd this would show a huge indeterminite 2 suiter. Looking at my hand I'd guess the Majors and so would bid 3S as I have a clear preference. If pd happens to have H and a minor, he will bid the minor at the 4 level. A D bid I would raise to 5. The reason I don't bid 3C is that pd will pass in the very unlikely case that he holds the minors. If he does hold the minors, (or D, see above), I want to be in 5 as my cards are then golden. helene_t
Playing Woolsey or Capp, a direct-seat overcall of 2N shows 5-5 minors. Even if you don't play such a defense, I think it's the most likely interpretation. But it could be different in 4th seat. In any case, he must have some kind of 2-suiter. I'd bid 3♣. This won't be the best fit if he has the minors, but that seems unlikely given my own hand. The reason I bid 3♣ rather than 3♦ is that if he bids 3♥ over my 3♣, I know he has the majors so I can take preference with 3♠. If he corrected 3♦ to 3♥, on the other hand, I wouldn't know what to do.
Apollo81
This 2NT would normally show minors, but that looks impossible given the actual hand.
jim420
This 2NT would normally show minors, but that looks impossible given the actual hand. Indeed. This was the actual hand. Not knowing what this was all about, I passed to minimize the error... P.S. The scoreboard was really bizzare for this hand. Almost every kind of partials by NS or EW were attempted... 1NxE-5, 2♥xxN=, 2♠E-1, 3♦N= 2NN= 1♣N+1...u name it :P but there was no game possible
the hog
Jim, your partner is clearly a beginner. North has a X. You would probably pull that to 2D and there the matter would rest. Btw I don't necessarily agree with Apollo; that treatment, (minors), might be standard in the States, but many here play it as a big indeterminite 2 suiter, Roman style. Personally I think that is more useful.
