Hi,

the main problem with the Queen of diamonds

is, that you dont know, who has the single.

If partner - you have a trrick anyway,

partner may or may not get a trump

promotion

If declarer - you set up two tricks for declarer

What to play? Clubs.

Why did he leave? No idea.

Maybe a 6 card suit with AQ8 was a bit light,

... you should at least consider 2NT.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Marlowe's a lot better than me, but I disagree anyways.

You didn't give up two diamond tricks, just one. He can always establish the jack or ten via brute force (you're marked with the queen). The 'correct' card back was the eight- worst case, you give him the diamond he could always make on his own.

However, in this case, I think it may have been worth a trick to keep him off the board. I can easily see it going....

Trick 2: Diamond queen ruffed.

Trick 3: Spade to queen, ruffed.

Trick 4: Diamond, ruffed and overruffed.

Trick 5: Spade, ruffed with the king.

Or...

Trick 2: Diamond queen ruffed.

Trick 3: Club to partner's ace.

Trick 4: Spade to Queen and ruffed.

Trick 5: Diamond ruffed and overruffed.

Trick 6: Spade ruffed.

Partner Kxxx Txx 7x Axxx

Declarer: JTxx AJ7xx x KQx

(or switch the spade honors, doesn't matter).

If you lead a club immediately to the ace, you get the Ace of diamonds, club ace, and spade ruff...but that ends your tricks.

I think your partner left too early. But I may have missed something.

It is better not to play with some like this.

Someone has a singleton. If south is a beginner, than it is south. Why? You parnter lead the diamond 7 and south played the 9. Only one diamond is unaccounted for. If south has it, he "false carded" from the 94. But with the 94 if he didn;t play the NINE you would know partner only had one diamond, as from 97 he would lead the NINE.

So you were on a guess. Who had one diamond? You guessed wrong. IT happens, and isn't even necessarily wrong. It is much better to get rid of the butt head partner anyway. Odds are they are taking 11 or 12 tricks anyway, via ruffing a club to hook your king.
