Advice on life from elders

Hi all,

Im 23, coming to a potential fork in the road, no idea which path to take, no idea about the meaning of life etc. all quite scary, any gems of wisdom you wish to hand down?

Thanks,

D

I can't believe I'm going to seriously answer this, especially since my life is not one to emulate....

1. Follow your conscience.

2. If you follow #1, you'll regret the things you didn't do far more than the things that you did.

3. You're more likely to get something if you ask for it.

Now, if I could only follow my own advice...

Okay this may seem like BS but it is not - certainly it is a cliche.

Don't follow the money, follow your heart.

Fred is a prime example of the latter.

Also when you have a family, spend time with them. No project is more important than the family one.

From the "For what it's worth department":

In any area of conflict, no matter how trivial or how important, do not look for reasons to blame another or to point out their mistakes but only ask yourself one question: what was my part? What could I have done, thought or said differently that would have led to a better outcome.

You cannot change anyone else; the only control you will ever have is over yourself.

Allow yourself to do some crazy things. No I'm not talking about drugs. Rather things like setting up an exotic music intrument import company, or going to Greenland for a couple of months to do voluntary work for an icebear asylum.

Because, as jtfanclub said, you'll regret the things you didn't do far more than the things that you did.

And also because if you want to find the meaning of life you have to look for it. That's far better than reading, asking or thinking about it.

Just do what feels right. I do not think you should take others advice without being 'comfortable' about it. So, listen to advice, but use your judgement. Just because you are young does not mean your own opinions and values are irrelevant.

I'm 58, coming to a potential fork in the road, no idea which path to take, no idea about the meaning of life etc. all quite scary.....

Honest, there's more than one turning point I guess, and, much to my surprise, there can be more than one 'second chance'.

My advice would be that good things come to those who get off their arses and do something about it. Don't sit around and wait for things to happen because they won't. Make them happen.

Oh... but I'm younger than you. So I'm not so much an elder. Therefore I may be horribly wrong. B)

Also not much elder (just by 4 years) but my two cents:

no idea about the meaning of life etc

Don't look for a meaning of life, instead give your life meaning yourself.

no idea which path to take

Don't think too much about what path to take, instead explore all paths you would possibly want to take, one will present itself as long as you keep active.

Allow yourself to do some crazy things

Agree! Last summer I was at a fork in the road, and decided to go to a World Bridge Championship 1 week in advance with a partner I had never met except on BBO. It was a lot of fun and we didn't do that badly either B)

We have an awful lot of wise people in here.....we just need a lot more out there.

Remember that you were given every element that you need to accomplish and learn from every experience that life will bring to you. In this respect, treat life as one long test of your mettle.

After each and every experience, reflect on its meaning and how it related to you and your place in life and the universe.

Remember that the past is dead and the present is for preparing the future.

Good luck with that.

chose one of the forks yourself, the most important thing is, if you cant make a decision about which fork to take you are screwed.

If you don't like the first fork, go back and try the second fork (if it is still available) if it is not still available and you don't like your fiirst choice, you have learnt a lesson and that is all part of lifes rich tapestry.

Do in life what you feel is right at the time, hindsight is something none of us have and no one probably ever will

Two negative pieces of advise.

1) Don't take advice from the internet

2) Just because someone is older, doesn't mean they are wiser... it just means they were born before you, so don't be in a rush to take advise from elders.

Now, if you are paying attention to the above, you might not listen to the following (or the above for that matter).

3) Do what you enjoy, you will make eventually make money at it, and if not, at least you will have fun doing it.

Do something - try to avoid things that are illegal, or against your morals (note that that could bear little resemblance to what society thinks is moral). Try to avoid the ones that are more dangerous, or costly, than you can handle. But otherwise, do it.

You will regret the things you don't do more than the ones you do.

Please note, however, that you will regret some of the things you do. Nothing you do will avoid that - including doing nothing. You will definately regret doing nothing.

Michael.
