pclayton
Had this yesterday: ♠AKJ9xxxxx, ♥void, ♦xx, ♣Qx White on white you opt against a 4♠ opening. Even 3N is available as a NAMYATS opening, but you decide against that too. 9 winners is just too much. So you open 1♠ and the auction takes a bizarre turn: 1♠ - (2♥) - 3♥ - (4♠)5♥ - (dbl) - 5♠ - (pass) Do you take another call?
awm
I pass. Partner should bid on with 1st round control in one minor and 2nd in the other. There are plenty of hands partner could have where slam has no play: Qxx Kxx AQxx xxx In fact partner is almost sure to have the "wasted" spade queen, so if partner has any heart values at all we likely don't have slam. Free
Pass, partner misses a minor suit control somewhere... We've already shown our slam potential imo.
whereagles
Gonna pass this. Don't like those minor suit holdings and pard isn't too happy with our cue. Why didn't I open 4♠??
pbleighton
"Do you take another call?" Certainly not. You asked a question, and partner said no. Bidding 6S is bad for the partnership. If you had wanted to bid slam unilaterally (a reasonable choice, though I agree with 5H), you should have just bid slam. "Why didn't I open 4♠" Because the hand is too strong for an NV 4S. Vulnerable, I think 4S would be a reasonable alternative. Peter
Double !
Respectfully wish to ask a questionI pretty much know but have never played namyats/mitchell xfers. (Yeah, I am telling the truth.)Why is this hand too strong for a 4D opener.Does a 4C/D opener specifically show an 8-trick hand, or is there some wiggle room?fwiw, my preference is to use whatever bids i might have at my availability to show the freaky hands when I get the freaky hands so I don't feel I have to make up for my highly skewed ODR later should the opps get frisky and try to mess with my mind (easy to do). tiaDHL
pbleighton
"Does a 4C/D opener specifically show an 8-trick hand, or is there some wiggle room?" This depends how you play it, but when I played it, it showed 8-8.5, not 9. Peter
whereagles
"Why didn't I open 4♠" Because the hand is too strong for an NV 4S. well... personally, I would never bid anything below 4♠, but ok
