4, followed by 4NT over 4 to imply better diamonds than clubs.

You don't think partner will take this as RKC for spades? I think it is dangerous to bid this way undiscussed.

If I have no agreements here, I'll just bid 4.

To be honest it never occurred to me that 4 could be anything other than the minors :)

Perhaps I should reconsider?

I do normally play 4 is a slam-interest hand in the minors whereas 4NT is still the minors but weaker.

Under the given choices, 4 is slammish minors, as suggested.

You had other options for spades + minor (3H or leaping michaels). Hands that bid 4H should be at least 6-5 in the minors. If partner, knowing this, bids 4, I pass it in a heartbeat.

Depends on methods. If we play that 4minor is a two-suiter with s, then 4 is logically minors: and I would not worry about hearing 4: partner is not going to suggest s as trump when he passed 2. If he does, we're in trouble, because he has long s as well: note the silence of 3rd hand white v red when we have a void.

If we don't play 4 as both minors, then I choose 4N, even tho that risks a 5-2 fit as opposed to a 6-2 (or 6-1) fit. This hand has too much slam potential to suggest a partscore in s, but not enough to force to slam via 5 or 5N... btw, is there a difference between 4N and 4? 5N and 5? Is there a good case to be made that if 4 is minors, 4N is (gasp) natural? Why not?

Frankly, it would not surprise me to learn that a quiet 3 worked best :) Partner holds Jxxxx Qxxxx x xx... But bridge is not a game in which pessimism is often rewarded.

And my dreams he holds Axx xxxxx x AJxx.
