How high and what strain?

Because anything I bid here will be interpreted as cue-bids (if not, what do u do if u want to cuebid?), I'm stuck with 3NT. C'est la vie. I hope we open 2 on very good hands, not only very very very good hands.

Naturally unhappy but would chose 4 over 3NT. I'm not that interested in higher matters with an aceless misfit (in the sense we cannot find a fit if it exists).

An example of why Gazilli and similar mechanisms are useful as you will have shown some values in the auction 1-1NT-2-2-3... even though, to be honest, you are only slightly better placed :(

1 - 1NT (F)

3 - 4[/hv]

I decided to raise spades with no great conviction. I felt that we had the values for game and that spades was usually going to be a playable strain whereas NT might or might not be.

We were pretty lucky in the play:

T1 2 - 9 - K - 3

T2 6! - 4 - 8 - Q

...

Making 11

I felt a bit for West as that could easily have been the right play at IMPs. I believe it takes a diamond lead to defeat 4. 3NT has all kinds of handling problems and the defense will usually prevail with 3 and 2. Again, only one hand presented with which to judge.

I would have bid 3NT. Incidentally I think the 3S bid sucks. For all you know you could have a C slam, a C game, or some other game contract, or no game available at all. 3S is very poor.

I agree 100%.

My specific solution with this type of hand, assuming 2/1 GF, is for 2 to guarantee 4+ and 2 to be potentially artificial and hence semi-forcing. If the auction does not survive 2 under these parameters, 2 is right. If it survives one round, NOW I can bid 3 for 6-4, unless partner does something weird to suggest something else. If partner raises spades or uses BART, I'll act accordingly.

Not doing all this stuff, I'd still bid 2.

Was 2club rebid banned?
