It's more an emotional than a rational thing, but I really like my hearts and I'd like them to become trumps.

ok, on a more serious note:

Partner can't bid 3 on a random 1345 4-count, can he? I'd like him to bring me the king of clubs, then I'm almost cold. If he really really doesn't bring me anything, then 4 looks good: they lose a heart and 2 spades, and pd can't give me my diamond ruff. (These are approximate calculations. my real reasons lie above)

I would expect and encourage partner's to compete based on lousy hands with a few s. So I have to pass this one.

You're red, they're white. Competing with a few hearts and a lousy hand, in the long term, is a losing proposition, imo.

I would not encourage partners to do this.

Given that, partner must have reasonable values for the 3H raise. Since I was bidding 4H over 3H, its either X or 5H for me. Pass is not forcing, since partner doesnt know we were about to bid game.

In this poll, I choose X.

Could work out poorly though. B)

I agree with everything here, except the conclusion: I bid 5. There is a good chance that I will get a lead, and even when I don't, I can expect partner to have some working cards. If we credit partner for a modest but reasonable high card collection, then RHO was bidding on shape... and either we catch a stiff in dummy or rho has what he thinks is a double-fit, so we will maybe catch short s in dummy. And since LHO rates to hold the K (he has the majority of the opps' high cards on this auction), I'm not at all optimistic of beating 4 when 5 fails. Heck this could be a double game swing deal.

This was the full hand :

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=sj4h10852dk10942ck9&w=st973hj3da7caqj85&e=sk865h6dqj653ct62&s=saq2hakq974d8c743]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

5 makes exactly and 4 is down a lot.

But maybe more interesting than the result is East's bid of 4 as a preempt against the likely 4 coming on his left. What do you think about it?
