I overcall 2,

I got to figure we can make something, maybe not at the four level or higher, but something. So I will double 4 and hope partner doesn't bid 5. With both minors i hope he bids 4NT for me to pick.

His passing 4x would also be a possible solution that could work out badly, but it is just matchpoints. :)

I'd start with 2S. The auction just becomes too tough to manage if you start with X. For isntance if you X, and pard bids 2N leb, do you bid 3S or 3N? 3S may shut NT out, and 3N may shut spades out. And you are overbidding. 2S definitely risks missing a game though.

Over 4H I would just pass it out. I know this is hard to do when you just have the opponents set, esp red/white, but this is not what X shows. X is takeout. Your partner, looking at very short hearts, is going to take out. The fact that partner couldnt bid 4S over 4H with shortness means he does not have a big fit. I think its going to be very common to hear 5C after your X, but even if he bids 4S then you are probably going down if he couldnt bid the first time when you had a plus vs 4H, and if he bids 4N you are probably going down in 5D. You only have 1 ace. This hand is suited for defense, and unfortunately double doesn't say that.

I kind of like 2NT over 2. The heart holding of KQx is really bad for playing in a spade contract. Opener usually has the ace, and either partner will upgrade his worthless shortage, or LHO has shortage and will get a quick ruff. I suspect that if partner has some hand with three spades, we will make 3NT more frequently than we will make 4. The 2NT call is also closer on values to describing the hand.

After 2-2NT-4-Pass-Pass, double is fortunately penalty. :(

The main problem on this kind of boards is to evaluate the hand to the closest type of hand and to anticipate the further development of the events. So which bid is closest:

a) 2 showing 11-16 , 5+

B) 2nt showing 15-18 bal, with 1 1/2 stopper

c) dbl + bidding 3 showing a good one suited hand, 17+

d) 3 showing a 14-16 hand with a good long suit

My choice is either a) or B), and i prefer B).

About second bid, if i chose a) i pass. If i chose B), i'll take a shot and double in MP's, but at IMP's pass is still probably right
