Another hand from the Norwegian premier league

Maybe I post some more hands later, but since they (like the "Your bid" post) are mostly problems I or partner missed I post this success to counterbalance. It is not very difficult, the 2 other declarers who got the same friendly defence also made, but it is still the type of hand that makes bridge fun. After partners first hand weak 3 (all vul) you reach the not very good (to say the least!) 4:

Txx

9x

KJT98xx

AQ9

AT876xx

AJx

You get the friendly lead of a spade, and when you put in the T RHO covers with the K. You win the A and lead a small diamond towards dummy. After you put in the 9 RHO wins the Q and returns the heart K. Over to you.

It is safe to assume WEST has KT of diamonds behind you. You didn't say which "friendly" spade was lead nor their leading agreement, but you are going to play WEST also for the spade JACK. Thus he has two vulnerable stoppers (if he leads a diamond or a spade he gives you a trick in that suit).

You will win 2, 1, and some number of hearts. On a good day, that number will be 6 for 9 tricks. To win 6 you have to guess the heart suit correctly (someone with Qx or 9x of hearts and you go right).

You will have lost two tricks (the diamond and the trump) so the loser count is correct of a vulnerable stopper squeeze. I assume I guess hearts right and EAST gets in and leads something through me, say a trump. This is the ending I play for...

[hv=n=sxxxhdckj&w=sjxhdktcx&e=sxhdxxcaq&s=sa9htdajc]399|300|When I lead the LAST heart, west will have to either come down to a singleton JACK of spades, singleton king of diamonds, or throw away his exit card in clubs (if a club, was returned after losing a , then same ending occurs, if a spade or diamond, then I would remove top card in that suit, but the ending works the same.

As long as south "guess" right, West is a dead man. But guessing right could be difficult. West might have thrown then diamond TEN and kept a low diamond for instance and a full count in spades maynot be available. Anyway, this is the theory of the hand... guess hearts right, and catch west with the cards we think he is marked with ... Diamond KT and the spade jack (assuming the lead told us about the spade honor).[/hv]

Agree with Ben. To guess the heart, the relevant holdings are RHO with KQ (1 holding), K9 (1) or KQx (2). So it seems right to try to drop the 9. I don't think RHO grosvenorred with K9x, but if so it would make for a good story.

Maybe my comment about the friendly defence was misleading, it seems the contract was making on any defence after the spadelead. Hannie is correct that the percentage play is the T, and this was also what I played. The 9 fell as needed from the left. RHO now switched to a club after a long tank. It would be more interesting if he had played a spade or a diamond (I should probably refuse the free finesse and aim to endplay any opponents by returning the suit he plays), and I ruffed and plyed out all the trumps. I had a count on the spades (LHO had discarded 3, he had 4 originally) and played A and another spade. RHO was endplayed and had to give me 2 diamondtricks (he had KJx, KQx, KQxx, xxx). The endplay would also have worked against LHO in the position given by Inquiry.

As I said in the introduction, I felt this is the kind of boards that make bridge interesting :)

You did get friendly defense... your LHO with T8xxx of diamonds played low when you lead towards the 9x... if he pops up with the TEN, there is no chance for a vulnerable stopper endplay....

Actually there is, if he pops up (he only got four diamonds, but that is immaterial) and play a heart to the Q and A I am still OK (if no trump I ruff a diamond, take the spade-finesse and lose just a diamond and 2 trumps). I play the T and RHO can for instance return a high diamond (or a club). I play off all the trumps as before and endplay RHO with the remaining high diamond.
