I have agreed that double in this auction is "take-out, but prepared for a pass" i.e. usually not a void, and usually with fair defence.

This is an unusual auction for me, because I play double is take-out by opener but penalties by responder.

Especially with the weak notrump, I think this double is "cards." It can't be a true penalty double since the opponents have promised a bunch of spades and so has partner. Opener is normally looking at (at most) a doubleton spade. I think double shows a strong notrump or equivalent values with a 1-2 card holding in spades. The intent is that responder will often convert, but may pull to 3m or on a hand with a single spade stopper and a long suit, for example:

Kxx

xx

KQxxxx

xx

Opener can then correct this to 3NT with the right hand (typically an honor in the minor and side cards in the form of quick tricks, like xx AKxx Axx Axxx) or pass 3m with the wrong hand (say Qx KQJxx xx AQJx).

You are playing four-card majors, unlimited 1-level openings, and a weak notrump (13-15 HCP).

No, I'm not!

definitely monkeys

I add this option to my post to estimate the number of monkeys who randomly vote. The expectation for this random variable should be close to the number of choices times one fewer than the number of votes. One fewer? Because I am the first monkey who makes that choice the leading one for awhile.

Seriously though, we (gnome and I) are playing an EHAA system in which the opening one-level bids are almost forcing on responder. For the Americans who know about it, the system is designed to be a quick-in-quick-out system where the retarded GCC disallows some critical aspects of our Gnome club system, like relays. For all others, just be glad that your NBO has at least one brain cell of one person dedicated to system regulation.

I voted t/o (1543/1534) but in France it should show 2533 and 15+ HCPs, I suppose.

As for the "monkey" option: Dan Kleinman's infamous "stripe-tailed ape"-double presumably referes to makis, which is a lemur (prosimian). I.e. neither an ape nor a monkey.

Well not sure too many people play unlimited one level opening and weak no trump in france (aside from a few italian guest stars) . If i were to play such a system i would know what the double mean :) i guess values

Sorry, my usual slugishness, forgot to read the conditions.

In France, they open 1M with a 5332 15-17, so I think the double should show such a hand.

Playing EHAA, the situation is similar.
