Is this worth making a takeout double?

If partner was a passed hand, I would,

in 2nd seat no.

Not in the direct seat. It's fine in the balancing seat.

That's funny, because I was thinking almost the reverse. The upside of making a double is much lower when partner is a passed hand as we are unlikely to have a game. Also, partner doesn't know I am this light. So what happens when, say, LHO raise to 3 and partner says to himself "Partner may be strong, I have a fit, and partner won't play me for too much because I am a passed hand" and so you end up at the 3 level on a 4-4 fit and 20 points between the two hands?

I would unhesitatingly make a take out double with this hand in 2nd seat. I would probably also do it in 3rd or 4th seat, but it would strike me as a riskier proposition.

Here is a style followup:

You hold: <!-- ONEHAND begin --><table border='1'> <tr> <td> <table> <tr> <td> Dealer: </td> <td> West </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Vul: </td> <td> Both </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Scoring: </td> <td> IMP </td> </tr> </table> </td> <td> <table> <tr> <th> <span class='spades'> ♠ </span> </th> <td> A93 </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='hearts'> ♥ </span> </th> <td> 74 </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='diamonds'> ♦ </span> </th> <td> A96 </td> </tr> <tr> <th> <span class='clubs'> ♣ </span> </th> <td> 109642 </td> </tr> </table> </td> <td>  </td> </tr> </table><!-- ONEHAND end --> in 4th position and hear the auction:  Opps open 1, partner doubles, RHO passes.

Do you bid 1NT, 2, or something else? :)

2c my longest suit with less than 10 hcp and minor ....no problem so far

Yes I promise zero hcp so far...no problem.

If I make another bid ...I got a giant hand :)

<snip>

One still has to figth for the part score, and it may

be the only chance to find a cheap sacrifice,

and it maybe possible, that we have a game,

which makes because of good fits rather than

HCP power..

And partner knows, that I may be this light, if I

make ke a takeout dbl and he has passed, at least

in my partnerships.

If partner is not a passed hand, for all we know, partner

may hold the strongest hand, and it may be very awkward

for partner to find correct bids, if he has to cater for

such a weak hand.

With kind regards

1NT, I have 6-10HCP, a stopper,

and thats what I tell him.

2.. Hand is suit oriented, bid my longest suit with only three cards and one stopper in their suit.

1 NT, the hand is NT oriented with 5332 and a real weak club suit. :P

I won´t hang my american pd for 2 Club, but here this would be no good bid as this is limited to 0-7 .

I would still bid 1 NT as it describes my hand much better and I doubt that I need more then one stopper after a 1 minor opening.

And pds hand had also been a double for me. Not perfect and minimum, but still clear cut.

No, I don't think this hand is good enough for a double. But it´s close obviously.

The follow up problem:

I much prefer to bid clubs. Axx is bad for a 1NT response if we have a decent alternative.

Close between 2 and 3, but I think I´ll settle for 2.

Q1: Maybe.

Q2: 2.

As an aside, I'll make this 2 call promise 6-9 HCP's because I will also pretend that 1 would have been a Herbert Negative and a direct 1NT a positive (6-9) heart response. 1...1NT would show 6-9 balanced. :)
