What would you open?

Say you open 1:

1 - pass - 1* - 1

?

What is your rebid? 1 is 4+ but could have longer diamonds if weaker than 12 HCP.

Lets say you rebid 3NT. Should partner run for slam with?:

Open 1, rebid 3N...

I expect pard to pass 3N. Its very fortunate we have a nice side suit, but there's no guarantee of that.

Now sooommmeee posters might suggest a 2 rebid to 'cater' to the 3% chance we have 6, but I think this is bad bridge.

2 would have been nice, but it's no guarantee u get to 6nt. Only if u want to reply to 2 with 3 (showing 3+ controls and a 5+ suit with at least an A/K), in which case 6 is trivial after rkc.

Otherwise 1 and 3NT are totally acceptable and pd's pass is the only sane choice.

Agree with everything, except the estimate of 3% B)

2...3 seems sane. I have either 8 surely with two chances for a ninth at NT or three and a half losers at suit play. Perfect description.

If I start 1, 3NT is not bad, althougb I've already underbid to a degree.

Partner might move. He expects nine tricks from me. 10 is really safe, and 11 gets cheap insurance rates. If he does move, 4 seems reasonable.

The only idea I disagree entirely with so far is the idea that bidding after 3NT is insane. I'm not sure how 10 tricks is ever in jeopardy in this auction, and 12 seems fairly reasonable a possibility.

I can live with 1C and 2C, the later espesically,

if you can get out in 3C, i.e. 2C does not force

to game.

Unless you are playing specifically SEF or German Forum D(+?), 2 is the only strong opening bid, and thus 2-2x-3 is forcing - otherwise you can't bid a game forcing club one suiter.

I know, but I seem to remeber, that a 2C opener in standard

american is just 95% forcing to game, espesially, if you play

2D as a waiting bid.

With kind regards

Yes, but you certainly can't get out at 3, as the 3 rebid is forcing.

(I would guess in standard, 2-then-3 is forcing to 3N or 4, although I would not be surprised if many treat is as game forcing.)
