I deal and open:

4♣ - X - pass - 6♥ all pass - making

the other table went:

3♣ - X - pass - 4♥ all pass

I try to put the pressure on and make them guess but it seems that I too often push opps into making slams when I preempt more aggressively than the other table.

Comments on 4♣?

Any good advice on the tactics involved with preempting at imps?

I think 4C is not too aggressive, I'd rather bid 5C then 3C. You made the opponents guess and they guessed well. I suggest you congratulate them and continue to make it difficult for them. The more you make them guess, the more they will guess wrong.

4♣ is completely correct. Opps have taken a flier and got it right. sht happens.

I'd open 4♣ and in the long run the opps will missguess more often than after 3♣ where, in this case, I suspect someone didn't value their hand highly enough to try for slam.

Much more often than not, opps will "find" 4♣X-1 or 2 instead of 4♥ (e.g. if they have only a 44 fit). These things happen, but u have to accept such happenings with dignity.
