the hog
The 1C opening can show a 3 card C suit, right? In that context, I think pass is the correct initial action. Now I would bid 4C.
Winstonm
I have a preference for an immediate 2C. This hand is never going to want to penalize 1S, and after a pass it will be hard to describe. Although 2C slightly overstates the support, in cases like this I think if important to support quickly in order to let partner make most further decisions about the hand. In the auction given, how do you express your hand now? If partner holds something like void, Axx, Axxx, AKxxxx game in clubs is almost cold, but if he holds more like void, AKJx, KQxx, Kxxxx prosepects aren't so good. So after pass you really can't jump to 4C and partner would have to be inspired to move with hand 1 over 3C. And as Mike Lawrence once pointed out, sometimes it's important to show this little bit of minor support quickly in case partner has a good enough suit he can compete to the 3 or 4 level. (Edit: I posted without reading any of the responses, so if this is redundant, well too bad. :P )

Now I would bid 4C. ok, assume opener only 3cards ♣,then his hand is exact 3433 and 12-14hcps,what is opps hand?21total counts and 9cards ♦. should i puerilely think they will sign off 1♠?i think i'm gaga if i did so. :D :P regards 000002
Winstonm
What is the big concern over partner holding 3 clubs, anyway? 2C in a 4/3 fit - BFD. Partner surely won't compete any higher with a 3433 pattern, but it will be important to him to know there is a fit with many 5431 patterns. I think pass is more of a knee-jerk reaction than a well-thought out analysis between pass and 2C. I am not faulting the passers, I just don't think that is the best call. han
I would have bid 2C so I find it very interesting that Garozzo, Hamman and these other world class players would pass. I expect that they know what they are doing Winston. I've read the thread so I am biased, I'm convinced that 4C is the right bid.

What I would like to know is why Hamman, Garozzo, and other world class players chose NOT to bid 2C - then I could learn something. I argued that 2C is best, but they obviously disagree - I would like to know why.
