Free
You're playing a team match, All Vulnerable, you hold:[hv=d=w&v=b&s=saq7xxxxhatxxdckx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] pass - pass - pass - ??? What do you plan? A simple 1♠, or something else?
whereagles
4♠, unless I'm playing a relay system.
hotShot
1♠, I'll go slow here, if partner does not have wasted ♦ values, 6♠ will not need more than the 9-10 HCP, he's likely to have.
Halo
1S Yes my next bid might be over 5D, but I think we should take the risk to give partner the chance to make a bid.

whereagles
Since everybody seems to be quite confident about an eventual slam on this one, will anyone care to tell me how you're planning to find out if pard has the right cards? helene_t
4♠, unless I'm playing a relay system. But isn't it standard that relays don't apply after a 3rd/4th seat limited opener? I'm sure Ben has a high-level opening that shows this hand excatly (kidding) but otherwise I open 4♠.
whereagles
But isn't it standard that relays don't apply after a 3rd/4th seat limited opener? Who says I'd open with a limited bid? <_< I'd try the opener that would enable the relay sequences, be it 1♠ or 1♣ or whatever
brianshark
I like 1♠.

The auction starts 1S P 2H p 4D p and we get to slam in HEARTS opposite x KQxxx xxxx Axxx. Sweet. The auction starts 1S p 1N p 3S p and we stop in 3S opposite x Qxx Kxxxx Qxx. Sweet. The auction starts 1S p 2C(drury) p 2H p 3H p and we get to slam opposite Kxx KQxxx Qxx xx. Sweet. Lots of things can happen. We're unsure about strain and level. We have no one to preempt. Why make a unilateral bid with such a hand?
ohioply
4♠ I'd rather get it out there than bid 1s and have to wonder what to do when bidding goes 1♠ - 2♦ - pass - 5♦
pbleighton
We have the boss suit, plus with 4 hearts we may be playing there. 1S. Peter
pclayton
1♠ is fine. This hand has so much potential, that 4♠ just shuts the door on any intelligent bidding. I think 4 of a major openings in 4th seat should be very narrowly defined. I would opt for something very pure like: AKQxxxxAxxxxx What's everyone else think? Or should a 4 level preempt in 4th seat not even exist?
Halo
My view: With spades - doesn't exist. With hearts - not sure, maybe your had (pclayton) maybe still doesn't exist.

flytoox
I think 4S is a very very bad choice. You simply put all eggs in one basket. 4S should show a very pure hand. But this hand's strength will vary with pd's response. The right place could be a partial, a game or even a slam in spades, hearts, or clubs. Why not ask for pd's opinion first before you make the final decision?
brianshark
4♠ is very unilateral. It's the bid you make in the MBC or an indy playing with some randomer you don't trust enough to have a sensible constructive auction with so you punt what's likely to make. whereagles
It is very unilateral, yes. But in practice it works more often that it should, which is why I choose it
