I ran yesterday with: KQxxx, xx, Qxxx, xx - at red / white after Han overcalled 1 over 1 and RHO left in a reopening x.

This isn't jumping from the frying pan into the fire, its escaping a known stack to a potentially bad stack.

I agree with Gerben - this is an auto xx. 2 seems pretty rich to me, but it may be tougher to double that 2 with my spots.

Did you mean to pass 1H to begin with? lol.

Sure did. I play 1 as forcing here.

My turn to bid the D partner, no doubt the axe will fall, sure hope things are better here.  Re dble might get us to the 3-4 H when a 5-2 D fit will play a wee bit better with some control of trumps.

even the 5-1 diamond fit could easily play better than a 4-3 heart fit. Not to mention when partner has equal length and better hearts (and his hearts will likely be better) and chooses hearts. Plus 2D has less of a chance of getting doubled.

Agree with 2 mostly for the reasons Justin named. Also, we didn't open 2, so partner will know this is likely based on a good five-card suit. I don't see any reason partner will leave 2 in with some 3406 hand or the like.

Haven't we seen the -1000 @ Camrose? :)

(I have but ignorance is bliss so XX)

The Camrose auction was different.

(for those who weren't watching, the auction was

1C (polish) 1D P P

x P P xx

P ?

The 1D overcaller knew that the redouble was SOS. He took the view that

1. the best strain was diamonds

2. he was thus comparing the merits of playing in 2Dx or 1Dxx. If he could make 6 tricks, that would be -400 in 1Dxx but -500 in 2Dx

3. he decided he had a very good chance of 6 tricks, and so passed

He was wrong (in fact the best spot was indeed 1Dx, but the 2nd best spot if I remember correctly was 2Cx)

Now, one could argue with his conclusions in points 1-3 above, but he took a not unreasonable bridge view of the hand and he knew he'd passed an SOS redouble.

I wasn't questioning that Frances. I realize that both members of the partnership knew XX was for SOS, it's just that XX ran the risk of being passed out. Even reasonably. Technically XX was an OK bid and passing it out was I think even better. But it lead to 13 or so IMP's for "the bad guys" :(

If rdbl is SOS but overcaller still thinks his suit will play better, he should bid THREE clubs, not pass out the rdbl.

It depends on his hand. If he thinks he'll go down 1 redoubled in 2C, he should pass (as -400 vul beats -500 vul, or -200 NV beats -300 NV). If he thinks he will go down 2 in 2C he should run (as -800 vul beats -1000 vul, and -500 NV beats -600 NV). This is what frances was saying.
