Finch
[hv=d=e&v=n&s=skj72h5dj10863c543]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] RHO deals, 32-board KO imps matchAuction 1:----------- P P 1H x P ? 3H 3NT P ? what do you call on the first and second rounds ("call" of course includes passing...) Auction 2----------(forget what you might infer about partner's hand from auction 1) P P 4H xP ? x xx5H ? If your first ? is a pass, that ends the auction (funnily enough). If you bid one of your suits, LHO doubles "action" showing a hand that wants to bid 5H but is doubling in case partner wants to defend, usually singleton or void spade. Partner's redouble sets up a forcing pass position. What do you do over 5H?(be honest if you would have defended 4Hx)

Finch
As Marlowe. Why is this a problem? <_< Because those actions will get you a result way below par on the board?
whereagles
As Marlowe. Why is this a problem? :) Because those actions will get you a result way below par on the board? And why should I know that before hand? Wait, I know: because this is a problem :P
pclayton
1. 1♠. Over 3N I try 4♥. Since pard didn't whip 3♥ I expect a source of tricks and my stiff heart is a nice card. 2. 4♠. I really don't know what to do over 5♥. I don't know what pard's doing here, but since we are in a FP, I'll blame transfer this.
Guest Jlall
1) 1S then pass seems pretty clear. 2) 4S first, I guess I would pass over 5H.

Finch
I thought this was a very tough hand.[hv=d=s&v=n&n=s10hkq1098xxdxckqjx&w=skjxxhxdj109xxcxxx&e=saqxxhaxxdakqxcax&s=sxxxxhjxdxxxc10xxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Table 1 (I was South of course, you can tell from the hand)-------- P P 4♥ xP 4♠ x P5♥ P P xAll pass NS -300 (they didn't get the club ruff, which is very tough to find)They didn't think of the redouble, but it looks obvious to me unless you are gambling on a misunderstanding and +690 or so. Table 2 (Good guys EW)--------------------------- P P 1♥ xP 2♦ 3♥ 3NTP 4♠ All Pass I was a little surprised that East didn't move over 4♠, but West is known to be a rampant bidder (if you bid 1S in the auction above, pretend the doubler was 3352 and you've missed 7D instead of 7S). 5 imps to the good guys. I could have presented the hands and asked for a good auction, but I don't like "construct the auction" threads. You can all just think rude things about East's actions at both tables intead if you like!
Guest Jlall
I think the 3N bid is horrible if partner has bid 1S over the double.

mr1303
Why is the North hand doubling 4S? :)
Finch
I'd have liked to have the HA (or the CA) to double 4S, but it led us to -300 so I'm not complaining.
jvage
Why is the North hand doubling 4S? :)As Frances said in her original post, Double shows that North wanted to bid again (5♥). He shows this by doubling instead of taking a solo action, allowing partner to pass with very good defense. This is a common but not universal treatment (something to discuss with your regular partner?). After game-level preempts the preemptor often got something to spare. Instead of being forced to pass, opening 5♥ or masterminding by bidding twice on his own, this is a good way to involve partner. mr1303
I understand the basic premise about a double suggesting something extra for the 4H bid, I just don't feel that the North hand is worth it. He's bid his hand when bid 4H, and forced the opponents to guess what to do at the 4 level. They may have guessed wrong by bidding 4 spades, and East may make a slam try that would fail. OK, it got a good result here, but I think this is the ends-justifying-the-means scenario
